Demographic and Social Hierarchical Makeup of Afghanistan in the 20th Century Noura & Fawziah

Afghanistan is a multi ethnic society. The population of the country is divided into a wide variety of ethnolinguistic groups. The ethnic groups of the country are as follow: Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Turkmen, Baloch, Pashai, Gujjar, Arab, Brahui, Pamiri and some others.

The official religion in Afghanistan is Islam, which is practiced by over 99% of its citizens. As high as 80% of the population follow Sunni, Islam. The remaining are Shias. Apart from Muslims, there are also small minorities of Sikhs and Hindus.

Highest in the social hierarchy. All are Sunni Muslims

Tajiks migrated from Tajikistan to escape the Russian red army. main language: Farisi

The majority of Uzbeks are Sunni Muslim and are fluent in their own language Uzbek.

Hazaras make up the smallest portion of the population, and they have been persecuted throughout history.
