Johnston Community Primary School March 3rd 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has a been busy week in school to kick the half term off! I have tried to include as much information as possible in this newsletter.

As ever, if there is anything we can do to further support your child and/or your family, please do not hesitate to get in touch. My email address is: Williamsr1688@hwbcymru.net

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Williams.

Chewing Gum Issue

It appears that a large amount of chewing gum is being discarded on the tarmac at the entrance to our Early Years unit. Please do not discard any used chewing gum in this area as it takes a considerable amount of time to remove.

Eisteddfod Competitions!

Johnston School knows how to celebrate St. David's day in style. On Monday, it was wonderful to see so many different entries into our craft, cooking, writing and art competitions. We welcomed back Mrs. Davies (Headteacher before Mr. Thomas) and Mr. Denam (retired teacher) to judge the different entries. They thoroughly enjoyed the morning with us and they were blown away by the quality of the work!

We are very proud of all of the pupils who entered and I thank families for offering their support.

Charing of the Bard (Cadeirio'r Bardd)

The Chairing of the Bard (Welsh: Cadeirio'r Bardd) is one of the most important events in the Welsh Eisteddfod tradition. Each year, we hold a writing competition for year six pupils where they are required to write under a pseudonym.

We received a total of fifteen different entries. Well done to all of the pupils who entered.

Our winner this year was Ffion Lane, who wrote a wonderful story. She impressed the judges with her extensive vocabulary and use of a range of literary devices. Da iawn Ffion!

URDD Competition

On Friday, Mrs. Lane took a small group of pupils to Tenby to enter the URDD Eisteddfod competitions. Pupils are required to recite a poem to the judges without any help!

Pupil were fantastic and they have worked so hard to learn the poems. Da iawn pawb!

E-safety - All about 'TikTok'

TikTok is a video sharing app which is very popular with teenagers and young adults in particular. The app is designed for those who are aged 13 years and above. It can come with several risks so should not be used by primary aged pupils but we know that many of our older pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 have their own mobile phones and regularly access TikTok without adult supervision.

Risks to children include:

  • Being exposed to age-inappropriate content
  • Dangerous challenges e.g. the blackout trend
  • Contact with strangers - especially as accounts registered by anyone claiming to be over 16 years old are automatically set to public so strangers can download and comment on a child's uploaded videos.

If you have children aged 13 or above at home and your child is using TikTok, we would recommend you setting up the ‘family pairing option’. Family Pairing features let parents link their TikTok account to their teen’s account to enable a variety of content and privacy settings.

This will enable you to ensure:

  • Your child’s account is private
  • Set restrictions on comments on videos
  • Set restrictions on direct messages
  • Set restrictions on daily screen time
  • And set up restricted mode

Governor Learning Walk

On Tuesday we welcomed a group of governors to spend the afternoon in school; visiting classes and talking to pupils. They learnt more about reading and spent time looking at progress data.

Thank you to all who were able to attend.

Curriculum Development!

We are always working hard behind the scenes to develop our curriculum. In January, we spent time reviewing and improving our outdoor learning offer. We spent time thinking about how we can improve our healthy eating curriculum, using our outdoor cooking facilities to improve learning! This week, we made some healthy pizzas!
