We are excited to announce our new School Bytes finance system has now gone live!

What is the School Bytes portal:

The School Bytes portal provides flexibility for you to conveniently:

  • Make school payments online (including paying for multiple siblings at once)
  • Use a family credit to pay for an activity or school contributions
  • Download a receipt for payments made
  • View all historical payments in one place
  • Complete and submit digital permission notes
  • View the status of all permission notes

This can be done where you want at any time: day or night. Through the portal, you will easily be able to download a receipt once a payment has been made and have access to view all historical payments when needed. Online payments are processed in real-time and can be viewed by school staff immediately.

While our preference is for payments to be made via the portal, we will still accept payments via cash, cheque, money order and EFTPOS.

Year 4

In Geography this semester, we have been learning about the unique natural features of Australia. We learnt about the Great Barrier Reef and what makes it so special. Our artworks are inspired by the distinctive sea life found in the reef. We used oil pastels to create the drawing element of the artwork, and vegetable dye with water to create the background.

Year 4 had a great time choreographing their own sequence of dance moves for Stage 2 sport. Some students chose to perform their routines which utilised various levels of height, movement around the stage and synchronised actions.

Year 4 were faced with various team relay challenges. You should try running with a ball tucked under your chin! There were lots of different techniques and plenty of laughs during this race in particular.

Cross Country and Odd Sock Fun Run

Congratulations to all students who participated in our recent Cross Country/OSFR. A reminder to return your OSFR sponsorship forms by this Friday 12 May to your teacher or the front office.

Principal's Message

National Walk Safely to School Day

This event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 19 May 2023. National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

The objectives of day are:

  • To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
  • To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
  • To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
  • To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
  • To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
  • To promote the use of public transport.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
  • To reduce the level of traffic congestion.

We hope you are able to participate in this very worthwhile event, if not please take the opportunity to discuss and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour when the opportunity arises.

Road Safety and Children

Primary aged children are still developing an understanding of danger and safety. While they are often keen to do things for themselves, an adult should always be responsible for them in the traffic environment.

Your child/ren are vulnerable road users. They are still developing the skills that help them to judge the direction of sound and the speed and distance of vehicles. Your child is physically small, making it harder for drivers to see them. They may be easily distracted and tend to only be able to focus on one thing at a time. This means that they find it difficult to deal with sudden changes in the traffic environment.

Your child may be able to tell you the rules and how to keep safe near in and around vehicles, but in reality, will not always be able to apply them. Participating in the 'Walking to School Day' with your child whilst demonstrating and talking about the safety rules assists with the development of good road safety skills. It is recommended those students under the age of 10 years should still be holding on to an adult's hand when crossing the road.

A good interactive site that provides information is the NSW Government site, called 'Safety Town'. Please take some time to explore and talk about the Safety Town activities with your child. Other information can be found here: https://www.safetytown.com.au/

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday and we would like to wish all of our mothers and significant others a very happy Mother’s Day. May your day be full of much laughter and happiness.

Live Life Well

We are a Live Life Well school and as such promote healthy lifestyles for our students. This weeks well being messages are on healthy eating and screen time.

Dental Van Visit

In week 1 of Term 3 we will welcome the NSW Dental Vans back to our school. Students have the opportunity to visit the van and have their teeth checked. The dentists will provide written advice or phone parents, if they recommend any further dental procedures. If you would like your child to participate, please return the completed envelope that was sent home last week by this Friday 12 May. If you require an envelope, please contact the front office.

.

P&C Meeting

The next P&C Meeting is being held tomorrow, Thursday, 11 May at 6:00pm in the staffroom. Parents and carers are welcome to attend. If you require child minding during the meeting, please contact the P&C on bbpscanteen@gmail.com the day before the meeting in order for them to organise this.

The P&C does much to support our school and we are very grateful for what they do.

Congratulations to our recipients for the Citizenship Award for the month of April. These students will receive their certificate and book at next week's Whole School Assembly to be presented by Mr Michael Gudgeon from Ray White Real Estate, Byron Bay.

Congratulations to these students who received their Class Achievement Award for Term 2 Week 1.

NSW PSSA Football (Soccer) Knockout Gala Day

Congratulations to the boys and girls soccer teams who participated in the first 3 rounds of the NSW PSSA Knockout last Thursday in Bangalow. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship and represented Byron Bay Public School proudly. Unfortunately, the boys' team went down 2-1 in Round 1 against Bangalow, resulting in them not progressing to the next round of the knockout. The girls' team had some great results on the day. They won their first game against Coorabell 11 - 0 and their second game against Mullumbimby 8 - 0. The girls will now progress to Round 4 of the knockout competition.

On Friday, 5 May, 10 excited young ladies trekked across the road to the reccreation grounds to play a game of netball against Lennox Head Public School. The visitors were excellent netballers who knew the game well and LHPS were able to walk away with the win.

Our Byron netballers were absolutely inspirational and represented our school brilliantly. We often talk about our dispositions we display at our school and these 10 girls were shining examples of all our dispositions in one team. They motivated each other to the very last second, they persevered throughout the game despite the scoreline, they communicated on and off the court, they helped each other problem solve during each quarter and we enjoyed having a debrief and reflected at the end of each quarter and the end of the game. Congratulations girls, we are very proud of you.

BBPS netball team and their supporters would like to acknowledge and thank Anya Todoroska and Tamara Hosking for their wonderful umpiring and for generously giving up their time for our event. Plus, a big thank you to our parents and carers who were able to come and cheer us on.

Rugby 7's Gala Day

BBPS had 2 stage 3 teams compete in the Rugby 7's Gala Day held at the Recreational fields yesterday. Both teams had 2 wins and 2 losses. The students represented their school with pride and displayed excellent sportsmanship. Both teams had many players who had never played Rugby Union and learnt new rules and skills. Noah D and Suryan R were a force to be reckoned with when given the ball- scoring 6 and 5 tries respectively throughout the day. A special mention to Oliver M (1 try) and Nash W (2 tries) who were tackling machines and gave it their all. Jahmane R (3 tries) and Alfie W (2 tries) also stepped well to make a few breaks. Dylan J and Arlo S worked hard for their team's and also came away with a try each. Byron M and Quinn R were very quick and made many breaks and excellent passes for their teams. Fynn B, Levi H and Noah A worked hard to make many tackles and backed up their teams well.

We also thank Evan for his expertise and coaching of the boys. It was a fantastic day and I was proud to be part of BBPS. The boys were respectful, enthusiastic and willing to learn new skills.

Band Program

Music and performance are valuable in the growth and development of students at Byron Bay Public School. Music and learning to play an instrument are known to enhance intellectual maturity, language development, fine motor skills, social-emotional growth and literacy development.

Music education is compared to learning another language and increasing brain-learning. Developing the ability to play an instrument early in life as part of the school’s extensive curriculum is an exciting and stimulating opportunity for students to grow and develop.

The School Band Program includes students learning to play an instrument in individual lessons and performing either in a band, ensemble or as an individual.

Regular performance opportunities for parents and the school community enhance this exciting program. The next band event will be a performance on the B Block verandah at 9:10am on 27 June which will include both ensembles and band presentations.

For more information, please contact the front office on 6685 6557.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

For the next three weeks, our PBL focus will be looking at ‘Bullying. No Way!’ There is a fantastic website that teachers, parents and students can go to that provides lots of information on what bullying is, the importance of being an upstander, what you can do if you are being bullied and how to talk about bullying. Please click on the following link to take you to the 'Bullying. No Way!' Website. https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/

There are 4 types of bullying:

  • Cyber bullying
  • Physical bullying
  • Verbal bullying
  • Social bullying

The following information can be found on the Kids Helpline website https://kidshelpline.com.au/

How do I cope with being bullied?

  • Do things you enjoy. This can give you a mental break from the stress of bullying.
  • Get social support. Spend time with friends - or focus on making new friends who like you for you.
  • Focus on what you’re good at, your strengths, and how you are unique. Bullying can make you feel not good enough. Focus on celebrating the things that make you, you!
  • Know you aren’t the problem. People who bully often do so for personal reasons about themselves or personal problems they are facing/struggling with. This is never a ‘reason’ to bully someone or an ‘excuse’ for bullying.
  • Get support. Bullying can be very hard to manage and you shouldn't have to try and solve it all on your own. Professionals can work with you to figure out the best things to try, based on your situation and who you are as a person (because every person and situation is different).
  • Know that things do get better. Bullying can be stopped and does stop. Lots of negative things come out of being bullied. But sometimes positive things can come out of it too. For some people, taking action against bullying helped them become emotionally stronger. For others, getting help for bullying taught them new skills and connected them with new supports or friends. Some people were inspired to help others or share their story about how they overcame bullying.

Canteen

Don't forget - New cut off time for canteen lunch orders - 8:30am

Due to the increasing popularity of our school canteen, the order deadline will be 8:30am from this term. This is to ensure all orders can be completed by the 11:20am lunch bell. Orders are to be made online via the Flexischools app. It is recommended orders are placed the night before to limit the frustration of network issues or app overloading that may occur when ordering close to the deadline. The P&C thanks families for their ongoing support of the school canteen.

Roster | Term 2 Week 4

  • Mon 15 May | Belinda Gohra
  • Tue 16 May | Tanya Dingle
  • Wed 17 May | Genevieve Lai
  • Thu 18 May | Helpers needed please
  • Fri 19 May | Elke Van Haandel and Jodie Isaacson

The canteen is open Monday to Friday. To place an order, please sign up at https://flexischools.com.au/ (lunch orders must be placed by 8:30am). Cash will only be accepted if there is a problem with Flexischools. All lunch orders need to be placed through the online ordering system. We recommend placing your child’s lunch order the night before to ensure that the order has gone through. Please make sure that you follow the process all the way through to the order confirmation. Please check for a confirmation email after you have placed your order. If you have any problems with the Flexischools App, please try logging on through the Flexischools website. If you would like to volunteer in the canteen (9:00am - 12:00pm), please contact Claire in the canteen or email to bbpscanteen@gmail.com.
