ABISA, African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with the mission of promoting social and economic justice, civic participation, and empowerment of African immigrants and refugees

Black immigrants make up more than 8% of the immigrant population, yet Across the United States, the District of Columbia is the only jurisdiction to have established an Office for African Affairs within the Mayor’s office
Despite having one of the highest educational attainment rates, Black Immigrants but still face some of the the lowest levels of home-ownership and household income levels in the country
Despite the African immigrant population increasing by 137% since 2000, African/Black immigrants have been deported at disproportionately higher rates than other immigrant groups.
NYU/ BAJI Study
ABISA works to build communities that are economically and civically stronger, by adjusting the ideals of immigrant integration, streamlining socio-cultural and educational immigrant inclusion through advocacy, civic engagement, training, and services.
Many of the constituents who benefit from ABISA, are in the process of filing for citizenship status, pursuing educational opportunities in the states, boosting local economy with small business ventures, exploring their new rights, and the laws of the land.

About the Founder

Fatou-Seydi Sarr, Social Justice advocate and Human Rights Activist is the founder and Executive Director of ABISA (African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs) a nonprofit that helps African and Black Immigrants in Metro-Detroit to know their rights, access resources, become invested and civically engaged. A Senegalese native, Seydi is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Social Work (BSW) and Marygrove School of Social Justice (M.A. SJ). Her passion for social equity drives her commitment to advocacy for the intersectionality of religious, racial, immigration, socio-economy and gender issues. A mother and lay leader in the Detroit West African Community, Seydi is a court interpreter, a filmmaker and teaches weekly African dance classes in the city. Seydi proudly describe herself as an African Immigrant Black Muslim Woman.
