United to Beat Malaria, a global grassroots campaign of the UN Foundation, brings people together from around the world to take urgent action to end malaria.
For more than 15 years, United to Beat Malaria (previously known as Nothing But Nets) has helped protect more than 39 million of the world’s most vulnerable people by providing bed nets and other life-saving tools, in addition to successfully advocating for increased U.S. leadership and funding for global malaria programs.
Our brand may be changing, but our commitment and shared goal remains the same – to be the generation to beat malaria.
VISION STATEMENT
Every person around the world deserves to live a healthy, fulfilled life, but malaria threatens this promise for many of the world’s most vulnerable people, including young children, women and refugees. Despite tremendous progress made, a child still dies nearly every minute from the disease. This is a historic injustice that can — and must — be stopped through collective action. United, we will beat malaria and create a healthier, more equitable world for all.
TOPLINE MESSAGES
Every person deserves to live a healthy, fulfilled life. This is the vision all countries have unanimously agreed to time and again through international agreements like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals.
This promise is under threat every single day because of malaria. Malaria, caused by a mosquito bite, is one of the world’s oldest and deadliest pandemics. While tremendous progress has been made over the last two decades, malaria still kills a child nearly every minute. This is unacceptable: we have the power to beat this preventable and treatable disease once and for all.
Malaria is a historic injustice that mirrors the inequities in our society. Malaria disproportionately impacts young children, pregnant women and those who are at the greatest risk of other major global challenges: poverty, the refugee crisis, climate change and rampant inequities in access to quality health services.
We have made significant progress — reducing malaria rates by half since 2000 — but now that progress is at risk. Since 2000, global efforts have reduced malaria death rates by half and saved 10.6 million lives. But progress cannot be taken for granted. Even before COVID-19, progress was stalling due to insecticide resistance, plateaued funding and lack of political will.
The time is now to take a stand and beat malaria – together. COVID-19 has made it crystal clear what we have known all along: global challenges require global commitment and individual actions. Progress cannot wait. The children who are at risk of malaria cannot wait. We need to take action now.
We know that eradicating malaria will be no small feat. It will require extraordinary commitment, collaboration and innovation from all aspects of society: governments, private sector, the global health community and individuals raising their voices united to beat malaria.
A full spectrum of innovative tools and strategies is needed. Bet nets have contributed to more than two-thirds of the reduction of malaria cases over the last two decades and will remain a cornerstone of malaria prevention.
But it will take more than bet nets to beat malaria: We need a comprehensive approach with a full spectrum of innovative tools and strategies, including other preventative methods, diagnostics, treatment, the newly WHO-approved first-ever malaria vaccine as well as investments in the health workforce.
The UN Foundation’s United to Beat Malaria campaign is here to see this change through. By bringing together impactful partners and individuals who will not wait to see an end to malaria, we rally communities to fight this disease – together. We will not stop until we beat malaria.
United, we can be the generation to beat malaria. We all have a role to play to beat malaria once and for all. By each doing our part — whether it’s raising awareness or funds, advocating to policymakers or amplifying stories — these actions will add up to tremendous collective impact.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why did Nothing But Nets change its name?
In 2022, as we celebrate our 15th year, we live in a different world than we did when the campaign was founded in 2006; the communities in which we work are facing greater threats, the fight against malaria has gotten more complex, and the public and global leaders have a new, painful understanding of health inequities, seeding an opportunity for greater action.
While our core work and commitment to ending malaria remains the same, the time is now to rise to the challenge and redouble our efforts to have lifesaving impact.
To do so, we are committed to evolving our holistic approach. While bed nets have contributed to more than two-thirds of the reduction of malaria cases over the last two decades and will remain a critical cornerstone of malaria prevention, a full suite of innovative tools and strategies, including other preventative methods, diagnostics, treatment, the newly WHO-approved first-ever malaria vaccine as well as investments in the health workforce, are needed to beat malaria for good.
United to Beat Malaria reflects this multi-pronged approach and the collective power that we have: As a united front, we can be the generation to end malaria.
Is the campaign changing?
The campaign continues to evolve to meet the greater needs of communities in which we work.
We are committed to expanding our biggest asset — our diverse and powerful grassroots network – to be the generation to beat malaria.
While we have made incredible progress in the fight against malaria thanks in part to our efforts over the past 15 years, the time is now to redouble our efforts. Our biggest asset — our diverse and powerful grassroots network — remains the same.
Our core work and commitment to ending malaria also remains unchanged, but we are evolving and expanding our work – from partnerships to innovations – to meet this moment and achieve our goal of beating malaria.
