Entwined Sarah Yasmine Otmani

Morocco, a country in North Africa, is known for its mixed and rich culture of Arab, Berber, European, African, and Spanish influences. By examining elements like the people, practices, and cuisines, Entwined illustrates the love of Morocco’s distinctiveness. I first became aware of our lack of representation on an international level; despite Morocco's great accomplishments and reputation, it is still not recognized to the degree it should be. I've made the decision to let others know that we are here by allowing ourselves to be heard and perceived properly through this project.

As a Moroccan-American photographer, I went around photographing my culture to give it an accurate representation. People of all ages are seen throughout to show depth and quantity, as well as the many other ways we relate to our culture. The food and traditional symbols we see everyday are also pictured throughout the series. To me, Morocco is a land of love and community where everyone respects and supports one another. I believe that we should all explore, not only Morocco but the many other unrepresented countries around the world. It demonstrates equality for all individuals, and this initiative will only be the start of a truly amazing journey.

Sarah is a Moroccan-American photographer who is currently a sophomore at Beacon High School; she has a wide range of interests, including photography. It began as she merely captured a glimpse of the several photographs taken around her and questioned whether she could accomplish the same. Currently, her images work on helping create new senses of community regardless of who is viewing them. She passionately believes that perseverance and patience are all that are needed to achieve a very successful and fulfilling life.

This project was created in Future Imagemakers in the NYU Department of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts in Spring 2023.
