What is an Associate Degree?

An Associate Degree is a two year academic program at the undergraduate level. Students obtaining their Associate Degree would have completed their first two years of their bachelor degree. In other words, students who obtain an Associate Degree would transfer to a 4-year university as a junior to complete their final two years of their bachelor degree. Many students know this as “2+2 Program,” which simply means:

2 years at SCC + 2 years at a U.S. university = Bachelor's Degree

You will need about 68 units to obtain your Associate Degree and be able to transfer.

Advantages of an Associate Degree

  • Our annual tuition is 70-76% lower than the yearly tuition costs at the universities for the same excellent education, which costs between $45,000 - $60,000.
  • By starting the first two years at SCC for the lower-division courses (required for your bachelor’s degree), our students save up to $66,382 in total tuition.
  • Upon completion of their Associate Degree, our international students can legally work for one year under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program.
  • SCC graduates can transfer to prestigious universities. Successful completion of the program requirements guarantees students the ability to transfer to one of the 23 California State University (CSU) campuses, or one of the 6 participating University of California (UC) campuses to pursue a baccalaureate degree.
  • SCC also has agreements with many other private and public universities within California and out-of-state.
