Christmas Fun Run

Christmas may seem a distant memory, but the last day of term saw our annual fun run back in action. Students competed in tutor groups to see who could complete as many laps of the course as possible. Great fun was had by all with some even dressing up for the occasion!

Year 7 make their own mythical marvels!

The Year 7s had a very fun start to the New Year, when they had the opportunity to explore a range of myths and legends in their English lessons.

Inspired by the mythical creatures of times gone by, Year 7 had the chance to create their own mythical marvels, which they then used as a stimulus to compose and write their own mythical stories.

It seemed there were no limits to their imaginations. Stories were created about fire-breathing robots, vampiric, mirror-inhabiting bats and one truly terrifying beast that was a compilation of every creature presented across the Harry Potter films!

Afterwards, the Year 7s got to share their fabulous stories with each other and discuss and take away their valuable moral lessons.

It was really fun to design my own mythical creature and then make a 3D model of it; making a moral to teach people; and then write a myth about the creature I created. (EC Year 7 student)

A (belated) Christmas Carol

Key Stage 4 students got a late Christmas ‘presence’ this month, with a visit from ‘The Dickens Theatre Company’ performing Dickens’ classic Christmas ghost story - ‘A Christmas Carol’!

Year 10 and 11 students have recently studied or revised the novella for their English Literature studies and had the fortunate opportunity to witness Charles Dickens’ supernatural and allegorical tale be brought to life on the stage…on their very doorstep.

The Market Bosworth School sports hall welcomed Hannah and Ryan - only two actors - to take on the multiple roles of Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Fred and more. Students were transported to Scrooge’s frosty counting house; the crime ridden, filthy streets of Victorian London; the emotional scenes of Scrooge’s past ; the warm and welcoming home of the Cratchit family in the present ; a hopeless, potential future faced by Scrooge and finally, to a joyous ending of transformation and redemption - in just 75 minutes.

Their adaptation of the tale as a duo made students think hard about Scrooge’s self-centred persona and what could arguably be a character flaw in each and every one of us. We were able to witness this production come to life before our very eyes and be reminded of the powerful moral messages Dickens wanted to shed light on, as we move into a brand new year. So, as Tiny Tim said it best… “God bless us, Everyone!” and blessed we were to experience a morning of classic Literature and live theatre coming together in such an ingenious performance.

Year 9 get creative

While some of their peers experienced the slopes of Bormio, the rest of our Year 9 got to broaden their knowledge of American literature and film in their English lessons.

Over 4 sessions, the students got the opportunity to read and engage with Evan Hunter’s, short story, ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding', which deals with ideas about the power of ‘identity’ through the death of a 16-year-old boy, stabbed by a rival gang member.

Alongside studying the text, they watched and discussed the similarities in the way this theme was presented in Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptation of, ‘The Outsiders’, which also explores ideas of how we shape our own identity and others through gang culture.

In their final lesson, students got the chance to impress their teachers by creating their own ‘identity’ artworks, producing some beautiful pieces of work expressing and celebrating the different things that they thought were important in influencing their own identity.

The Power of Poetry

Students had the opportunity to enter the 'Power of Poetry' competition prior to Christmas. Schools from across the country entered and we had a total of 78 entries chosen to be published.

The competition gave students an exciting and immersive opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions about the world we live in and how we could make a difference through their words and the power of poetry. We had an overwhelming number of entries from KS3 students, each expressing their views about something that matters to them. A number of topics were covered by our students including: politics, global warming, nature, school, mental health, the list goes on...

We have a copy of the published book available at school for students to view, parents can also order their own copy to have at home.

Well done to all those that entered. There will be more opportunities in the future.

What's Been Happening in Maths?

TMBS Maths Primary School Network

The TMBS Maths Primary School Network Topics in Depths series started off in January looking at how we teach Order of Operations. It was great to have teachers visit from five of our feeder schools and hear about their experiences of teaching it. We look forward to our next discussion on Fractions later this year.

Mathematician of the Month (MOTM) and Numeracy Ninjas!

January saw Holly Bailey in Year 11 win the KS4 Mathematician of the Month and Zachary Galbraith in Year 8 become our KS3 Mathematician of the Month. Holly has been working very hard in every lesson, and is always helping other students. Zachary has been working very hard to catch up after being away and gaining great understanding of solving multi-step equations.. Well done to all students, all nominees and our MOTMs.

Numeracy Ninjas has been continuing each week for all Key Stage 3 classes to build on and improve numeracy skills. Well done to our Top 10 Ninjas for this month and keep up the good work!

Grand Masters of Numeracy Ninjas!

These students have achieved 30 out of 30 for 5 weeks in a row, a fantastic achievement. Well done to all of our Grand Masters!

Financial Maths

While most of the year group were off skiing, the Year 9s have been looking at Financial Maths. They have been working on understanding bank statements, taxes, types of bank cards and budgeting.

Fibonacci

Year 7 have been working on different types of sequences. Here is an example of one of their Fibonacci sequence drawings. Can you find places in nature where we see this sequence?

This Girl Can

On Friday 13th January 15 Year 7 girls attended a ‘This Girl Can’ initiative organised by HBSSPAN at Greentowers in Hinckley. The main focus of the event was to introduce new activities and encourage active healthy lifestyles. The 15 students had the opportunity to take part in a yoga class, a circuits class, a martial arts class, an exercise class and a healthy eating and well-being session on a smoothie bike!

We started our day in the yoga session where we focused on grounding, breathing techniques and warm up, sun salutations, standing and seated postures and then a relaxation cool down. What a fabulous start to the day. We then had a short break and moved onto a circuit session which did include those dreaded burpees (Martha loves them though!!!) We then enjoyed some light refreshments and a quick game of table football during our break before moving back into the sports hall for some kickboxing.

Our penultimate session was an exercise class in which the students all worked hard before moving to the health and well-being session and making smoothies on a smoothie bike. A great day was had by all. Fingers crossed there will be more opportunities like this in the future.

Here is some of the feedback from the students -

My favourite thing that we did for the 'this girl can' event was when we went on an exercise bike and while we were pedalling it mixed up a smoothie that we all enjoyed at the end. Overall I loved spending time with my friends and teachers. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed the PE trip. I have two favourite activities: martial arts and yoga. I liked the martial arts because it was something that I have never tried before and I also learned some different punches and kicks. After that part of the trip I really want to do that again. I really liked the yoga because I have never really done it before. I enjoyed it because it was very relaxing and quiet. I also loved all of the other things we did.
I had a wonderful time on Friday at Green Towers. My favourite out of all the activities was definitely the Boxing although I also really liked how you had to ride a bike to blend a smoothie.😃 Going to Green Towers definitely made my Friday 10 times better and I really hope that I get to take part in another out of school trip like that again! 😄 Thank you Miss Armstrong for taking us and thank you Green Towers for making Friday better.
My favourite part of the Green Towers ‘This girl can’ trip was the smoothie bike. We put fruit into a blender that was powered by a bike. The end result was a really nice, thick smoothie. It was fun to have a go to ride on the bike and see the fruit gradually mash up into a liquid as people cycled on the bike. It was a calm, non-physical (mostly) activity that was fun and social.

Get Boys Active

On Friday 20th January 14 year 7 boys attended a ‘Get Boys Active’ initiative organised by HBSSPAN at Greentowers in Hinckley. Similar to the girls' event, the main focus was to introduce new activities and encourage active healthy lifestyles.

14 boys had the opportunity to take part in a yoga class, a circuits class, a martial arts class, some indoor athletics and a healthy eating and wellbeing session on a smoothie bike.

We started our day in the yoga session where we watched a short clip of how professional basketballers and footballers use yoga to not only enhance their performance, but also help rehabilitation from injury. Similar to the girls' session in the previous week the session focused on grounding, breathing techniques and warm up, sun salutations, standing and seated postures and then a relaxation cool down. What a fabulous start to the day.

We then had a short break and moved onto a circuit session where we worked for 30 seconds on 8 exercise stations with a 30 second rest between each station. We repeated the circuit 3 times and had a 1 minute recovery between each completed circuit.

We then enjoyed some light refreshments and a quick game of pool and table tennis during our break before moving back into the sports hall for some kickboxing. Our penultimate session was an indoor athletics session where the students used reversaboards to do some relay racing. Our coordination was then tested with some triple jump and then finally our upper body power was required when competing against each other in the shot put.

Our final session of the day was a more relaxing health and wellbeing session where we took it in turns to make smoothies on a smoothie bike.

Another great day was had by all. Thanks to Cody - who was chief SAT NAV on the way home. Fingers crossed there will be more opportunities like this in the future. Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks to HBSSPAN for organising.

Trampolining Competition

On Tuesday 7th February TMBS entered a Key Stage 3 and 4 team in the level 3 trampolining competition at the Robert Smyth Academy in Market Harborough. Each team consisted of 4 students. Each student had to perform a number of set skills and then a set routine. The scores of each were then added together and the team positions were then decided from the accumulation of these scores.

The Key Stage 4 team finished in 5th position. Ella Walker managed a top 3 placing with a score of 16.30. Congratulations Ella on this amazing performance.

The Key Stage 3 team performed brilliantly to secure top spot. They are officially level 3 trampolining champions with both Mia Hawkins and Emma Conway finishing in joint first position.

All of the girls were amazing and a pleasure to take to the fixture. Thank you very much to all the parents and guardians that came to pick up students when we eventually returned to school in the early evening. Ms Armstrong

Badminton Brilliance

On Monday 13th February TMBS attended the Key Stage 3 girls badminton tournament at Bosworth Academy. Since covering badminton in PE lessons at the start of Year 8 and 9 a number of girls have regularly attended extra curricular clubs on Wednesday and Thursday nights. They have particularly shown an interest in playing badminton for the school so we decided to give them all the opportunity to play in this tournament. TMBS entered 3 teams and we competed against teams from Bosworth Academy and Redmoor. Each team consisted of 4 players; 2 players played singles and the other two played doubles. The teams played each other and eventually TMBS A team were crowned Hinckley and Bosworth Champions.

Many thanks to Bosworth Academy for hosting and HBSSPAN for organising the tournament. Finally I would like to thank all the parents and guardians for their continued support in helping with transport. Ms Armstrong

Year 9 Ski Trip

The 2023 Ski Trip Team had an absolutely amazing week in Bormio, Italy. After a long and excited 24 hour coach journey everyone was overjoyed to see the fresh white snow, blue skies and sunshine. All students got stuck in and progressed throughout the 6 days of ski lessons. By the end of the week everyone had made it up to Bormio 3000m and witnessed the beautiful scenery and red runs.

The slalom races and medal ceremony were a massive hit. Swimming under the stars and the fancy dress karaoke evenings were also great fun. Who knew TMBS had so many talented singers! Well done to everyone who took park in the tiring, but very rewarding week. Lots of memories were made which I am sure will last a lifetime.

Thanks to all parents/carers for your support. Mr Humphreys
