A Thanksgiving Note From Neal Jensen, CV CEO
Dear Employees, Guests, & Partners,
During this time of Thanksgiving, I have been reflecting on some of the things I am grateful for. At the top of my list are the talented, hard-working employees of our organization, our very tolerant patients, and everyone else who has helped us to achieve this goal. We have been blessed with a new facility this year thanks to each of you and your focus on the future. This year has been challenging, but you turned those trials into success. On behalf of the administration team, I thank you for your accomplishments this year. Our community is truly worth the hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. Without your commitment, creativity, and high standards, we would not be the thriving organization that we are. Thank you.
With many blessings,
Neal

2016 Annual Competencies
For three full days, October 25-27, CVRMC held its Annual Competencies Training, Flu Shot, and PPD Skin Test for all employees. When the doors opened, there was a line of eager CVRMC employees ready to participate. The employees came from the main hospital campus and also traveled from the Kearny, Superior, and Young Clinics. Some employees chose to head straight to the “shot” station, while others weren’t quite ready for the “wake up call,” and instead headed to various other stations.
The Competencies included a non-clinical loop consisting of twelve stations and a clinical loop consisting of fifteen stations. The final station for both loops housed the Flu and PPD Skin Test shots and the Needle Stick and/or Injury training. Stations were manned by very competent and enthusiastic instructors, ready and willing to provide important and beneficial education to employees. Some stations had verbal or video instruction, i.e., Customer Service, Patient Portal, etc., while other stations required physical activity, i.e., FIT test, Donning & Doffing, Hoyer Lift, etc. However, all stations had a Halloween bucket full of treats for the employees!
Hats off to the instructors who worked tirelessly providing excellent education, hands-on training, and shots to nearly 300 employees, culminating in a 90% completion rate. The remaining 10% of employees will be provided a designated window of opportunity to complete the mandatory training and receive the required vaccinations.
At the end of each session, names were drawn for various $25 gift certificates to Fry’s, Copper Bistro, and Hollis Theaters. Congratulations to the following winners in alpha order: Yvonne Askew, Adrianne Basham, Savannah Edwards, Lisa Garcia, Kathy Harder, Kimberly Hernandez, Christine Morales, Art Rocco, Henry Servondo, Tyler Shepherd, Keri Wakabayashi, and Jerry Wright!
Thank you to all employees for your continued dedication, professionalism, and compassion to the patients, the communities, and to CVRMC!

This Is Halloween at CVRMC
A BIG thank you to all of our employees that made it possible to hand out candy at the Downtown Globe Halloween event. Together we gathered over 15 THOUSAND pieces of candy!!
The CV Pharmacy won the candy contest, gathering 5,205 pieces of candy in their department alone. Respiratory came in second with 4,070 pieces!
Because of our wonderful employees, we had the opportunity to hand out candies to all of the little ghouls and goblins that visited the booth downtown. It truly was a fun event for all!
CV Foundation Art and Wine Auction a Big Success
The CV Foundation holds an annual Art and Wine Auction to raise funds in order to provide our patients and employees with the top of the line healthcare . This year's theme was "Once Upon a Time" and attendees were greeted with whimsical and fairy tale worthy decor. The event was held at the Gila County Fairgrounds. In addition to the art, wine and food was served by CV Food and Nutrition.
This event raised nearly $30,000, to be used in order to improve the healthcare of our regions for patients, employees, and their families. The CV Foundation has used funds from events like this one to purchase the most up to date technology and equipment available. Previous purchases include: labor and delivery suites and a digital camera for the OB Department, Centrifuges for the Laboratory Department, clinic equipment for the Pleasant Valley Clinic in Young, Arizona. The 160 Slice Premium CT Scanner is an example of the latest technology the CV Foundation has been able to monetarily support for CVRMC. It is the first 160 Slice Premium CT Scanner to be purchased by a hospital in the state of Arizona.
The CV Foundation is here for the patients of our region to help improve their quality of life by offering hope and healing; all made possible by the generosity of those who donate. If you are interested in donating or becoming a Philanthropic Partner, please visit our website and click on "Our Foundation" or call (928) 402-1141 for more information.

Making a BIG Move
In the last month, we have transitioned into our new facility and it has been a wonderful and exciting time.
In the first week of November, we moved the OB, Med/Surg and ICU units into their new spaces. This was the first phase of our move and everyone did a great job. We had been in some of those spaces for a long time. One of the nurses commented that she was “born in one of these rooms”. Another nurse was a little teary-eyed when transitioning to the new space. She commented that she had worked in that space “for a very very long time”.
The following week, we moved the phlebotomy unit, patient registration, gift shop, pharmacy, and the cafeteria. There were a lot of moving parts involved in these new spaces and while this phase of transition included a lot different people and departments, everyone did a great job in coming together and working late into the night to make sure our patients in these areas saw a seamless transition.
Lastly, we moved the specialty clinics the week before Thanksgiving. For those that don’t know, when we move a clinic, it has to be re-certified by the State of Arizona in order to ensure the space is compliant with State health guidelines. To the credit of all of the departments involved, the clinics were moved with little incident and the new clinic spaces were certified by the State Inspector and we began seeing patients that afternoon.
Overall, moving the hospital into the new space was a challenging and exciting time. We are very grateful for the extra effort of all those involved. Thank you!
Every Patient Has a Story.
Mr. Cruz Shares His.
“I have been in several hospitals in my 85 years. This one has been the top of the list. Not one time while I’ve been here has anyone treated me with anything less than kindness and respect. They are great. Everyone comes in and does a great job. I’ve been in some hospitals that do not have this kind of care. I’ve had great service from this hospital (CVRMC) and have not seen a person without a smile on, which always makes me feel better and I thank them for that. All positive remarks. You should be extra pleased with your staff. I have nothing but admiration and respect for all the staff of this hospital. Tell the “Big Boss” the hospital and staff are 6 stars out of 5.” – Mr. Frank Cruz
Mr. Cruz’ zest for life shines through his smile, his rosy cheeks, and his enthusiasm for life is undeniable. “I was a teacher and coach. I taught chemistry and biology. I coached football and boys basketball and had 2 state championships in basketball,” states Mr. Cruz as he takes a quick breath to continue on. “I also coached girls basketball for a short time; that was an experience. I tried to use the same coaching style as I did with the boys. That didn’t work out too well. At one game I had 14 girls crying in the locker room at half time. I backed off, apologized, and had to change my style.”
Growing up, Mr. Cruz had many life experiences which motivated him to get an education and become a teacher, coach, and devoted husband. “I was born in Butte, Montana in 1931, and a little something about my mom, she loved husbands --- she had 7 of them. My father spoke 5 languages and his father wanted him to be a doctor – he had other ambitions.” He continued on, “I’m married to a very fine lady and we have 4 children that I am very proud of.”
“I got to go on a world cruise with the U.S. Navy. I was on a destroyer and worked down in the boiler and steam room. I was on the fastest destroyer in the fleet.” After his service, Mr. Cruz used the G.I. Bill to get his degrees in Social Studies and Biology.
Mr. Frank Cruz is a true example of a man whose life has been full. He has no regrets and is grateful for his wife, family, life experiences, and successes throughout his 85 years. His positive outlook, his genuine smile, quick wit, and eagerness to tell the next story, pulled from his shelf of memories, makes up his easy going personality. Every patient has a story. For Mr. Cruz, the plot of his chronicle is about winning and success. The essence, the core of all his pages, is about a life well lived.
