John Locke was a philosopher who held a more positive view on human nature. John was born on August 29, 1632 in Wrington, United Kingdom and died October 28, 1704. Locke believed people could learn from experience in order to improve themselves. Locke was an advocate for self government and strongly disliked abosolute monarchy.
With John Locke's ideas of natural rights, he had an impact on society by being fundamental to the U.S. Declaration of Independence. His ideas about life, liberty and property were slightly altered to liberty and pursuit of happiness. Locke's ideas made a central contribution to the development of liberalism.
General beliefs before John Locke were that there had to be a king, someone appointed by God and that you need to live by the Bible. It was Locke's ideas that inspired revolutions, such as those in France and America in order to gain more rights for the people.
To me, this quote means that you can have 10 years of schooling, but if you have always had everything handed to you...then you know way less than the person who has been struggling for 10 years and working hard for everything they've earned.
