Financial Institutions Commissioner Lise Kruse elected chair of national Conference of State Bank Supervisors

The national Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) on Tuesday elected North Dakota Department of Financial Institutions Commissioner Lise Kruse to chair its board of directors for 2023-24.

Kruse was elected during the organization’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

CSBS is the national organization of bank regulators from all 50 states, American Samoa, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. State regulators supervise roughly three-quarters of all U.S. banks and a variety of non-depository financial services. CSBS, on behalf of state regulators, also operates the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System to license and register non-depository financial service providers in the mortgage, money services businesses, consumer finance and debt industries.

“I’m deeply honored to be elected by my peers to serve as CSBS chair and provide leadership to this outstanding organization for the next year,” Kruse said. “The Department of Financial Institutions is committed to ensuring a safe and sound financial system for the citizens of North Dakota, and I look forward to bringing that same commitment to my role as CSBS chair.”

Kruse was appointed commissioner of the Department of Financial Institutions by Gov. Doug Burgum in October 2017. She had previously served as the department’s chief examiner of banks since 2011 and was originally hired by the department as a financial institutions examiner in 2004.

Since 1887, the Department of Financial Institutions has regulated North Dakota’s financial institutions, which today include state-chartered banks and credit unions, trust companies and non-depository financial institutions.
