ROWLAND HALL ATHLETICS // SPRING 2023

Upper School Athletics

The Winged Lions Athletics 2022–2023 year ended with some strong spring team results!

The boys tennis team had a banner season, going undefeated in region play and then blowing the competition away at the state 3A tournament, with titles at all three singles spots and a second-place finish for each of our two doubles teams that ended with the capture of the team’s first state championship since 2018. The girls golf team once again went undefeated in regular season play to win their third consecutive Region 17 title, then went on to battle to a second-place finish at the state 2A tournament. The boys soccer team placed second in region play and went all the way to the state 2A quarterfinals before losing a one-goal heartbreaker to be eliminated from further postseason play. Senior sprinter Jada Crockett raced her way to first-place medals in three events at both the region and state track meets, winning the 100, 200, and 400—an amazing feat! Her 400 time at state shattered the 2A state record, which had stood since 2015. Our softball team took third in region play and then went on to compete in the first round of the state tournament. And our first-year boys ultimate frisbee team had a solid regular season, and then went on to place 14 of 21 teams at the state tournament, a great showing for an inexperienced squad.

Another season with an amazing list of accomplishments, with credit going to our dedicated student-athletes and passionate, enthusiastic coaches: Rich Francey, Susan Daynes, and Jason Boe, boys tennis; Brianna Coopman and Spencer Schindler, girls golf; Joe Murray and Jack Schill, boys soccer; Mark Oftedal, Roland Tolbert, Jake Colangelo, and Ashley Hagensick, track and field; Kathy Howa, Kendra Tomsic, and Leslie Varoz, softball; and Xander Knock and Joel Long, boys ultimate frisbee.

Many thanks and congratulations to all! Read on for more details about each team’s successful spring journey.
