South Plains and New Mexico JC tie for Indoor Championship

Topeka, KS - South Plains (TX) and New Mexico JC have each won a share of the 2023 NJCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship with 107 points in Topeka, Kansas at Washburn University. For South Plains, this is their third consecutive title for the Texans and fourth overall since 2018. This is the third men's indoor national title for New Mexico JC and their first since 1980.

Iowa Western, Iowa Central, and Barton (KS) each collected top 5 finishes at the Championship.

Final Standings

South Plains wins its third consecutive title

The Texans put together an impressive weekend in Topeka, being near the top of the standings for the entire event. They finished first in seven events throughout the meet.

Sophomore Justin Guy won the 60mH with a mark of 7.90. The 4x800m team made history by breaking the Indoor National Meet Record with a mark of 7:28.38, which was .16 seconds better than the prior record. Hossam Hatib, who was a member of the 4x800m team, also won gold in the 600m.

Sophomore Kudakwashe Chadenga won the High Jump national title with a mark of 2.23m.

New Mexico JC wins first title since 1980

The Thunderbirds bounced back from 11th place in last year's indoor meet, to win its first title in 43 years. New Mexico's student-athletes were impressive all weekend by bringing home gold in five events.

Sophomore Kelsey Daniel shined by winning both the long jump and triple jump. Their performance in the long jump showed a mark of 7.81m was .1 better than second place.

Tapiwanashe Makarawu also won two events at the indoor meet, the 60m and 200m. The performance in the 60m dash was down to a photo finish where he slightly edged out James Dadzie of Western Texas for gold.
