3/2023 Board of Education Meeting Recap

The Operations Team gives monthly updates at the Board of Education meeting, often presenting about projects completed, or upcoming initiatives. Here’s a snippet from March's BOE meeting where Mr. Johansson and Mr. Stitzel update the BOE on current happenings.

OPS By the Numbers

27,834 breakfasts served through March...

82,770 lunches served through March...

Hundreds of satisfied students and staff.

Transportation

Spring is an especially busy time of year for the transportation department. There are multiple buses out every day for nonroutine trips. Nonroutine trips are anything outside of our regular transportation into and out of school each day.

These trips include 3 buses and an equipment truck for the SHS Track Team, 2 buses for the SMS Track Team, JV and Varsity Softball, and JV and Varsity Baseball. We also provide shuttle service for AP Testing and multiple buses for our students to go on trips to the Akron Zoo, Derby Downs, Progressive Field, Hiram House Camp (6th Grade), DI Hub at Kent State, Step 2, Senior Clap Out, Choir, and More!

We also have recently added to our fleet 3 new buses which are expected to be on the road by the end of April AND the Rocket Mini Bus! The Rocket Mini Bus is a 9 passenger vehicle which is used to transport some students but will also be able to be used for smaller transportation needs for teams, clubs, and more.

Technology

State testing has begun, and the technology department has been busy making sure our network is ready and all students have access to testing devices! We would like to thank the students for coming prepared on testing days with their charged Chromebooks. We would also like to thank the staff and guardians who continue to remind their students to have their devices ready to go on testing days!

As we enter the final quarter of the school year, it is extremely important that students have any technology needs completed before summer break. If a student’s device needs a repair, please make sure it is turned into the repair portal so it can be addressed as soon as possible.

Reminder, it is never too late to pay your technology fee. This fee helps with the continuation of the 1:1 initiative where all students have access to their own Chromebook in the classroom (with take-home rights as needed). This fee can be paid by logging into your PaySchool account. For additional information on this fee, please click here.

Food Services

March was full of special events. We celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with green (vegetables), eggs, and ham, St. Patrick’s Day with green cake and orange sprinkles, and we even had a Battle of the Entrees at the middle school! We served new items like the baja fish taco and pizza burger pocket. April and May will be full of fun days so be sure to check out NutriSlice for upcoming special events!

Our goal in the Food Service Program is to feed as many students as we can. We believe that a nutritious breakfast and lunch help students focus in the classroom. Students that qualify for the free meal program can receive a breakfast and lunch at no charge, every school day. For those that qualify for reduced meals, breakfast is $.30 and lunch is $.40. For any student not in these programs, breakfast is $2.25, and lunch is $3.00 at SES and $3.25 at all other buildings. Not sure if you qualify for free and reduced meals? Fill out an application on PaySchools.

Not only do we want to feed the students, we also want to feed the administration and staff. We serve adult meals that can be preordered at every school. These include salads, wraps, sandwiches, or the daily entree. We also offer a combo that includes chips, drink, and a snack.

Please email food service at mpettitt@scsrockets.org with any questions.

Facilities/Maintenance

The facilities and maintenance department continues to work to maintain the District facilities. At the March Board of Education meeting, it was approved for upgrades, fixes and maintenance for the lift station behind Henry Defer Intermediate School. Also at that meeting, there was approval for HVAC work at Streetsboro High School. The funds used to support these projects were permanent improvement funds and classroom facility funds.

Did you know that the City of Streetsboro passed digital (EMC) sign legislation? The Operations Department is now working with several vendors and city officials to put at least one digital sign on the campus of Streetsboro High School. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting opportunity!

We are hiring! Please see the following link, as we are looking for up to 12 summer cleaners/custodians: https://www.applitrack.com/streetsboro/onlineapp/default.aspx?Category=Maintenance+-+Summer

Business Operations

Streetsboro High School hosted ID Dance competition March 9-12. This event was held in the high school auditorium and was the biggest event hosted in this venue to date. The Operations Team worked with the competition leadership to ensure a successful event that included the local Streetsboro community as well as some of the booster organizations. A BIG THANK YOU to our custodial team, Jim Boardwine (Auditorium Manager), Natalie Ekron (Concessions), Alana Links, and Andreas Johansson for all that you did for this event!

Rentals of District facilities have continued to come in throughout the year and at the March Board of Education meeting, three more rental agreements were approved.

If you are interested in renting a space please see the following link: https://www.scsrockets.org/operations/rent-our-facilities/

At the April Board of Education meeting the Operations Department recommended the purchase of 221 ASUS Chromebooks. Through due diligence, negotiations, and research, the District was able to receive a deal for every 30 chromebooks bought 2 were free. Therefore the District received 235 chromebooks for the price of 221 and received a very competitive price. Thank you to Dan Stitzel and Rick Alleshouse for all of your efforts to ensure Streetsboro students are receiving the necessary technology for their education. These chromebooks are being purchased with funds generated from the technology fees with support from the general fund.

As the school year nears completion, there will be many end of year activities that the Operations Department will assist in planning or provide support to. Please be on the lookout for communication of each building's events from building principals and assistant principals.
