About the Lute Men: The Pacific Lutheran University men's swimming team made a big splash in its first meet of the calendar year, returning to action last Friday with a decisive 114-45 win over Northwest Conference rival Pacific University.
Seth Koivisto headlined the Lutes' (1-3-1, 1-3-1 NWC) efforts in the pool, winning three events over the course of the evening. The senior breezed to the win in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking a time of two minutes, 4.2 seconds with teammate Nicolas Celebrado second in 2:16.08. Koivisto later took the 100-yard freestyle in 50.14, edging teammate Christiaan Chandler by less than a second (50.98) before teaming up with Carson Braddock, Luke Farag, and Charlie Cutter to win the 400-yard freestyle in 3:29.27.
Devin Stanley, Celebrado, Na'inoa Loo, and Chandler set the tone in the opening event, collaborating to win the 400-yard medley relay in 4:01.24. Farag won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:25.09 while Cutter and Chandler went one-two in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 22.76 and 23.38, respectively.
Devin Stanley secured top billing in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.98), finishing ahead of Loo (2:14.44) who would win the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.41) later in the meet.
PLU additionally received runner-up finishes from Braddock in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.72) and 500-yard freestyle (5:11.13), Cutter in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.82), and Celebrado in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.44).
About the Lute Women: The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team made it look easy last Friday, capturing nine of the 11 events contested to steamroll host Pacific University 142-56 for the Lutes' 24th consecutive dual meet victory.
Annika Eisele, Isabella Valles, Jessica Ordaz, and Malia Wisham opened things up by winning the 400-yard medley relay in four minutes, 17.05 seconds. Bailey Hamilton and Mary Campbell secured the top two spots in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 2:06.52 and 2:07.67, respectively.
Wisham sat atop the podium in the 50-yard freestyle (25.92), edging Eisele (26.88) by a split second before Jessica Ordaz won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:16.97.
Eisele took the top spot by a comfortable nine-second margin in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:17.71 before Ordaz won her third event of the night, prevailing in the 100-yard freestyle (55.06) with Sidney Chan-Orcutt placing second (56.41).
Wisham won her third event in the 500-yard freestyle, stopping the clock in 5:17.00 with Campbell taking second place. Makenzie Chan-Orcutt (2:36.59) and Tori Oshiro (2:42.00) went one-two in the 200-yard breaststroke before Valles, Campbell, Maya Lovre, and Sidney Chan-Orcutt bookended the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:57.06).
PLU additionally picked up runner-up performances from Allie Burke in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:00.69), Sidney Chan-Orcutt in the 200-yard IM (2:17.26), and Lovre in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.93).
About the Bruins: George Fox was last in the pool on Jan. 14 with the women fall 149-52 to Whitman College while the men stumbled 147-50 to the Blues. GFU men and women both have an identical 2-3 record in dual meets this season.
