World Book Day 2022

We had a fabulous day of dressing up and celebrating our favourite books and authors yesterday.

Thank you to everybody for making such a fantastic effort with their outfits. Here are just a few ...

The children really enjoyed the activities that had been set for them to work on during the year. Here are a few examples of the amazing work completed.

Friends of Cedar Road

On Friday the 27th May The Friends of Cedar Road Primary School will hold a Jubilee event which will include a cake sale, a tea and coffee stall, mufti and most importantly for today - a plant sale!

In preparation for the plant sale we are asking parents to bring in any yoghurt pots, plant pots, empty toilet rolls, and wooden lollipop sticks into school.

If you have any of these items that you no longer want/need please pass them on to your child's class teacher by Friday 11th March. Children will then get to plant their seeds during a special lesson and watch them grow before they are available for you to purchase in May.

Romeo & Juliet

Year 6 had the exciting opportunity to see the Romeo and Juliet ballet production at the Royal Opera House in London on Thursday 24th February 2022.

A beautiful piece of work by Farhan in Year 6 inspired by the opera.

"Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet has become a great modern ballet classic of the world repertory. The nuanced and detailed choreography gives dancers in the lead roles a wealth of opportunity for differing interpretations of the doomed lovers."

"Evocative designs by Nicholas Georgiadis bring the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and the Capulets. Prokofiev’s ravishing score sweeps this dramatic ballet towards its inevitable, emotional end."

Sporting Events

Netball - Wednesday 2nd March 2022

On the second of March 2022, several year six girls went to a netball competition at Abbeyfield Secondary School against multiple other schools in Northamptonshire. Once we arrived at 1:30pm, we went straight onto the netball courts to play our first game of netball. We played high 5 netball, which is when five people from each team play against each other. The matches are only approximately five minutes each. Every player gets to be a substitute and each player always plays a different role. As it was our first match against another school, we came 7th out of 10th, which is great and we are all so happy. Overall, it was a great day out for all of us.

Football - Thursday 3rd March 2022

When we arrived at Malcolm Arnold, we were met by Mr Green, who had worked with us before. We were also met by Mr Cole, who we all remembered, and he works for Cobblers. Mr Olone, who works for MK Dons was also there. To start off with, they told us what the training session was about - ball mastery. After that, we did some drills to help us master the ball, once we had done several drills, pacman, sonic, see you later alligator and a few more, it was time for us to have our break. In the afternoon, we did two more drills and, after that, we played a few games. During the games, we scored 12 goals and only lost one match! Before we knew it our day was over.

Financial Support

With the cost of living rising it is understandable if you are having trouble managing your money, however, there are ways to help yourself get out of immediate financial danger.

Gingerbread.org.uk is a fantastic website that has advice on ways to plan long-term to better manage your money, and how to make ends meet. They also have an online grant checker - use it to see if you could qualify for financial support.

We have also been made aware that Northamptonshire Council are providing financial support to households struggling with the cost of living over the winter period, including vulnerable households with or without children. Support includes: household hardship vouchers and winter fuel bank.

To check if you are eligible please visit https://www.westnorthants.gov.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/household-support-fund

Pupil Premium

Your child's school may be entitled to pupil premium funding if you receive one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income Based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Child Tax Credit Only (with income up to £16,190) with no element of Working Tax Credit
  • National Asylum Seekers Support
  • Guarantee Element of the State Pension Credit
  • Employment and Support Allowance (income related)
  • Universal Credit (income dependent)

Reception, Year 1 and Year 2: All children at this age are eligible for free school meals so you will need to apply separately for the pupil premium for your child's school. Please be aware that a child must reside with the applicant to receive the pupil premium. Use the online form via the link below to apply.

Cedar Road Reading Corner

Welcome back to The Cedar Road Reading Corner. This week we have some more fantastic book recommendations for you from our staff members. Let us know if you give any of them a try!

Miss Anderson’s recommendation for Reception and KS1 is Old Bear by Jane Hissey

'Bramwell Brown and his friends Little Bear, Duck and Rabbit attempt to rescue Old Bear from the attic using a number of ingenious methods.'

I chose this book because my grown-up daughter was once a little girl who loved (actually still does love!) teddies. I asked her what her favourite book was when she was little and she reminded me of Old Bear. This book is perfect in every way, from the delightful story to the gorgeous illustrations. It’s a book to treasure.

Miss Anderson’s recommendation for Lower KS2 is Clarice Bean, Utterly Me by Lauren Child

'Clarice Bean loves reading the adventures of Ruby Redfort, ace girl detective and secret undercover agent. Ruby is always going on exciting missions, but the most Clarice gets to do is go to the local shop on her own . . . But when Clarice and her best friend, Betty Moody, decide to do their school project on the Ruby Redfort books, they suddenly start finding mysteries everywhere. Like why are all the coats on the wrong hooks at school? Where has Granddad disappeared to? And just what is going on in the garden shed?'

I love this book because it is about a girl who isn’t overly keen on school. This might sound odd coming from a teacher but I’d like to think I’m not like Clarice’s teacher, Mrs Wilberton. Although we laughed all the way through, Clarice experiences lots of trials and tribulations that we all experience so it feels very familiar too.

Miss Anderson’s recommendation for Upper KS2 is Holes by Louis Sachar

'Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so when a miscarriage of justice sends him to Camp Green Lake Juvenile Detention Centre (which isn't green and doesn't have a lake) he is not surprised. Every day he and the other inmates are told to dig a hole, five foot wide by five foot deep, reporting anything they find. Why? The evil warden claims that it's character building, but this is a lie. It's up to Stanley to dig up the truth.'

Witty, inventive and completely unique, this is a masterpiece of storytelling that combines sly humour with irresistible, page-turning writing.

What’s to like about a book that is about …well digging holes? Well, here goes.

  • Great characters- I liked them all apart from the ones I wasn’t supposed to like.
  • The story line was like nothing I had ever read before or since.
  • I like onions. Go on, read the book and you will know what I mean!!

Miss Anderson’s recommendation for grown ups is Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

'Miss Pettigrew, an approaching-middle-age governess, was accustomed to a household of unruly English children. When her employment agency sends her to the wrong address, her life takes an unexpected turn. The alluring nightclub singer, Delysia LaFosse, becomes her new employer, and Miss Pettigrew encounters a kind of glamour that she had only met before at the movies. Over the course of a single day, both women are changed forever.'

I chose this book because it left me feeling… happy…and we could all do with a little bit of that at the moment.
