As the crowd roared and waved their red, white and blue, the seniors from cheerleading, dance, football and marching band lined up to hear their names called for their sports--one of the last times the Sequoits would hear their names over the loud speakers in the stadium. With what would have seemed like swift competition in the first half, the Sequoits ended up taking the Knights off of their horse and tarnishing their shiny armor at the conclusion of the night. The game, which would see head coach Brian Glashagel tying coach Del Pechauer's winningest coach record with the win, was selected as the Chicagoland game of the week and was televised on Comcast channel 100 across the suburbs.
Captains Ben Nauman, Kevin Tamayo and Chase Becker are locked in as captains for the 2018 season, and every week the additional captain is selected to join them for the coin toss. This week Dylan Czerlanis was picked to represent the Sequoits for the opening coin toss. It was senior night in Antioch, which made this night even more special for the captains and the game that followed.
This was the Sequoits' third game of the year as they defeated both Lake Forest and Woodstock North in their first two matchups. Grayslake North came into the game winless, but knew they could do damage.
The first quarter saw a lot of penalties and only one score by the Sequoits. With a two-point conversion, the Sequoits ended the quarter with eight points and held the Knights scoreless.
The "Cardinal Crazies" were aware of the TV crew and represented the Sequoits wearing red, white and blue. With their traditional chants of "Y-E-L-L" and "I Believe," the Crazies were doing whatever they could to bolster up energy, excitement and spirit.
The Crazies also hosted a tailgate with burgers and hot dogs before the game in order to get fans prepped and ready for the senior night activities. Bags and footballs were also at the tailgate to encourage students to attend.
Sophomore Athan Kaliakmanis snuck in the first score of the game from the 1 yard line as his teammates celebrate. While the Sequoits entered the second quarter up by 8, by halftime the Sequoits went up by 14 over the Knights after a missed two-point conversion attempt.
"Being able to spend time with my friends [is my favorite part of being a Sequoit]," Kaliakmanis said. "[I love] to be involved in such a special community."
Junior Brandon Reynolds finds the edge and gets to the perimeter for one of his monster runs. Reynolds had seven attempts for 70 yards by the conclusion of the night.
"Last game was crazy," Reynolds said. "The fan section really showed up. With our fan section chanting and the other fan section chanting, it all got our hearts beating just a little bit faster."
Senior Kevin Tebbe and junior Tre Watson close in for one of many big stands by the defense.
"Playing both ways on varsity is tiring and beneficial," Watson said. "When playing both ways you have to be well conditioned or you'll be gassed early in the game; but playing both ways can be beneficial because you have the mindset of what players are going to do if you play on both sides of the ball."
