Covered Sadness By Megha Sindiri

Concept

The overall concept of the long-term project is about emotions. The topic I choose for this month is Covered Sadness, also thought of as hidden sadness. I struggle with talking about my emotions expsically sadness. I never talk to people when I am upset and instead go to my room and cry alone. I believe there are many other that feel the same. They feel like that they may be a burden to other and would rather deal with their problems on their own and put on a smiling face around others. Crying is a hard thing to express and talk about so, this project will help me express this specific emotion.

Research

For this project I will be messing around with photoshop. For photoshop I had to do a decent amount of research. I didn't remember all the technics to photoshops so I learned some again. Refreshing my memory did not take long because I took snippets of this video to help:

Then after saving and fixing up the picture I realize my lines were not and smooth and as rounded as I liked them so I did a little research and I found a video that helped me get a very clean look to it:

Process

The Idea

For this topic I knew exactly what topic I wanted to hit next. I have really been feeling this emotion recently due to some personal thing that having been going on in my life. I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to do Covered Sadness. After I decided the idea I moved on to inspiration where I could find the perfect idea to show how I feel.

The Inspiration

The consistency between the picture is obvious so I followed most of those for the final photo. I love the black and white with the high contrast. And I can see that most the drips don't go with the face except the second one and I knew I wanted it to be like that. In a way I wanted it to look realistic.

Taking the Shots

Taking the shots was straight forward, I got ready. I put on a black shirt to help with contrast and I put my hair in two simple pigtails. I set up lighting and because I knew exactly how I wanted to pose I started shooting but I was struggling to focus my camera which was the only problem. Other than that I got to shooting immediately.

Editting

Editing took the most time. I started which the simple black and white editing, It had to be high in contrast and shadows to show the different parts of my face. After making it black and white I transported it to photoshop and cut myself out and placed it on a whited background because that was the color I wanted the tears to be. After that I had to cut out the tears while using my inspiration and YouTube video I accomplished my goal.

Before Shots

Result

The picture is supposed to represent hiding your sadness and what you are going through for other peoples sake. When you know someone is going through worse and you feel as though your feelings should not be put on them because it will make other feel worse and you will be a burden. The tears are white to represent being invisible and not being seen. The idea of hiding your emotions for others.

Reflection

Overall I like the results of my picture it really pushed my creative ability, because I knew my topic before I have inspiration pictures. This emotion is hard to express and I believe I capture it in a way that was exactly how I wanted it. It also portrayed it so the audience could understand this emotion that can be common and recognizable to few.
