Dear University community,

Kudos to our College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Fine and Performing Arts for TWO impressive events this past Friday. The TAMIU Music and Friends Master Performer Series featured TAMIU’s Dr. Yu-Mei Huang on violin, joined by international guest artists Dr. Miroslav Hristov, and Dr. Chi-Long Hu. Ballet Nepantla offered an innovative ballet performance of its original “Valentina” production, exploring the strength and resilience of women during the time of revolutionary México… an insightful way of helping us to usher in International Women’s Day, tomorrow, Tuesday March 8.

  • Tuesday’s International Women’s Day events for both students and the community at large will include informational booths and displays, a walk in commemoration of the Day, a presentation on The Different Waves of Feminism, and more. Details are below.
  • The best defense against COVID-19 continues to be vaccination and boosters. Before you head off to Spring Break, please note that our last vaccination opportunity will be held Wednesday, March 9 in the Student Center Rotunda. A revised vaccination schedule will be shared after Spring Break.
  • On Wednesday, immigration reform as a solution to re-invigorate the United States economy will be the topic of discussion during the IBC Bank and Commerce Bank 2021-2022 Keynote Speaker Series at 6 p.m. at the Student Center Ballroom. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
  • Also Wednesday, Rice University president David W. Leebron will present a virtual lecture from 6 – 7 p.m. This is part of the new La Frontera Speaker Series hosted by the College of Education and Laredo Learns. Find out more online.
  • Commencement Kickoff on Thursday can help get you set for the big day when you graduate and cross the stage. Visit the Zaffirini Student Success Center Lobby from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. to make your arrangements.
  • Also Thursday, find out about “Polish Immigration to Texas” with Angelica Docog, who will present a virtual lecture at 7 p.m. via WebEx. This is part of our College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Humanities Lecture Series, “Diverse Cultures, Diverse Humanities,” supported by Humanities Texas.
  • Next week, please note that TAMIU’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety, University Police Department and Physical Plant will conduct fire drills as part of a regular testing program on campus.
  • After you return from Spring Break, make note of some of the activities that are coming up, including the first-ever offering of The Human Library, March 24.
  • Intrigued by AI? Does cybersecurity interest you? How about Full Stack Web Development? All are now being explored in a series of fee-based Boot Camps offered by the University’s Office of Continuing Education. Find out more on the Continuing Education website.
  • Mandatory randomized surveillance COVID-19 testing for all members of the University community: students, faculty, and staff is underway. Emails notify individuals of their selection for testing. Once selected, you have 72 hours to test on campus at no charge. There are consequences for non-compliance with this mandatory testing requirement. Please review your University email account regularly.
  • On-campus testing is part of our unified commitment to health and safety. Up-to-date information on testing, vaccination, and boosters is here. For more about our COVID-19 Pandemic response, visit our dedicated COVID-19 Response Center. A new mask guidance link is now available.
  • Let’s continue the use of recommended face coverings/masks, in addition to practicing distancing and rigorous hand-washing.

Here’s wishing you all a fun, safe and restful Spring Break! We look forward to welcoming you all back to campus March 21.

Go Dustdevils!
