Dear Mom and Dad,

Life is rough on the Western Front. War may seem jolly and fun from Italty, but believe me when I say it is anything but. To start, it is impossible to sleep at night. I have nightmares of what happened to my fellow soldiers and also about never seeing either of you guy again. Also, you can't sleep with all the bombs exploding right outside the French. Right now it feels like more of a when than an if one of these bombs is going to kill me. Also, the tanks are very powerful and also blew up my bunk, we got lucky. I hope everything is good in Italy and I hope you guys have not been touched by this horrific conflict. I will keep on fighting for Italy. I can't wait to get home and see you guys soon. We will have a great time when I get home. Dad, take care of Dario until I get back please. We need to watch Juventus play a soccer game when we get back. Love, Federico Tocini, Italian 3rd Division Sargeant

BY VERA MARY BRITTAIN

God said, “Men have forgotten Me:

The souls that sleep shall wake again,

And blinded eyes must learn to see.”

So since redemption comes through pain

He smote the earth with chastening rod,

And brought destruction's lurid reign;

But where His desolation trod

The people in their agony

Despairing cried, “There is no God.”

This poem describes the hardship of World War 1. It was so bad that many soldiers lost faith in their foundation, God. They believed war took everything away from everyone. Also, they believed the war was because of God getting angry at them. This poem shows how the war might have been happy at the beginning but in the end it was bad and many lost hope in God.
