Class 3 Our Learning

This half term has been full of fun and excitement. We dressed up as rockstars for TT Rockstars day, we took part in a Singathon to raise money for Barnsley Youth Choir and we had the Summer Fair.

Literacy

We wrote a fantasy narrative based on The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson. We really enjoyed this story and writing a different ending. We used our imagination and knowledge of the story to decide what Shen would do to the Emperor with the magic wand she painted. We used interesting adjectives and conjunctions in our writing to make it more detailed.

We read Oliver’s Vegetables and tasted the food from the story to help us generate adjectives to describe the different vegetables.

We we excited to be restaurant owners and write our own menu using foods that Oliver tasted in the story. We categorised the food under the heading we would see in a menu. We used interesting adjectives and worked on improving the presentation of our handwriting and sentences.

Maths

In maths we have counted and wrote numbers to 100. We started to write the numbers in words as well as numerals.

We are focusing on consolidating our existing maths knowledge and filling in any gaps that we may have to ensure we have a deep understanding. This half term we have recapped money, shape and measurement.

We had fun being shop keepers when we had a KS1 tuck shop. We identified the coins children paid with and worked out if change was needed.

We deepened our knowledge of 2D shapes by describing their properties and finding the horizontal line of symmetry.

Art

Our topic this half term was art. We looked at Andy Warhol and Pop Art. We learnt how to shade and looked at different shading techniques. We explored a colour wheel and we can distinguish between primary and secondary colours. We drew items of popular things from today and used these to create our final art piece using paints.

Science

Our science learning this half term followed on from Science by looking at plants. We named plants and trees that are commonly found in the UK and we labelled the parts of a plant.

PE

We developed our ability to play as part of a team this half term through the game of rounders. We have developed our turn taking skills, our underarm and over arm throwing and our batting capabilities.

RE

We have looked at lots of different religions this half term focusing on faiths in the community. We talked about rules and the importance of rules in Judaism. We enjoyed going on a mindful walk when looking at Buddhism and discussing how this made us feel.

RSE & PHSE

We have looked at money and it’s value in PHSE this half term and how this links to the jobs we can have when we grow up.

Summer 2

Wow, where has the time gone, we will soon be in our final half term of year 1! In Literacy we will be writing an information text on pets and a letter to our new class teachers. In Maths we will consolidate our learning from this year and fill in any gaps in learning as well as deepening our knowledge to prepare us for maths in year 2. Our topic focus for Summer 2 is History and as it is summer we thought it would be lovely to learn about the history of the seaside. In PHSE we will focus on our transition into year 2. In Science we will look again at seasons but this time focus on Spring and Summer. In RE we will discuss how we feel about life and the universe around us. In PE we will be doing athletics and getting ready for our sports day.
