Digital Photography 2 Kalli Dewees

Hi, I am Kalli Dewees and I took photography 2 because I have always been interested in photography so I thought it was a perfect opportunity. At the beginning of the class I was unsure if I should stay in the class but as time went on I felt like I was going to be able to use this in the future. I would say through the course I learned that I will always be able to find something to take photos of. I may have some struggles coming up with ideas for different shoots but there was always someone around who I could run ideas by. And eventually everything would work out and I would come up with a bunch of ideas but I really enjoyed that I was in a space where I could share my ideas and people would encourage me to follow through on those ideas.

I wish I had even more time in this class to continue to learn different things about photography. But after high school I have a feeling I will continue to take photos of everything in life that makes me happy.

This photo grid is from our first project where we could make up our own themes. I wanted to highlight my time in band because it was such a big thing for me the past 4 years. This is my all time favorite project I have created, I felt like it represents me very well because if you know my marching band has been my thing to get me through high school. I love how the end product came out, I think the dark colors with the pops of red really help the flag be noticed. Personally I learned that having a basic grid looks tacky but if you tilt the photos they look more randomly placed.
This was from the final project we did. Since I was on a trip I used that to my advantage, I took photos of everything and anything. With the idea of when I came back turning the photos into a instagram inspired grid. Without the overlays and drawings the photos looked very boring. I made the decision not to add things to every single photos. So some of the photos are just the photos but I still love it. I felt like the overlays and drawings added something new to the photos. During this process I learned to take breaks and go back later, before my breaks I changed the layout like 3-4 times.
These pieces are from the first time we got to make our own rules. I loved making these and all of the work that went into them. I did this project to get a look at what I could be doing after college. Each of these pieces are supposed to be social media posts for different sports teams. Each of them took around half of a block because cutting out people took a lot of time. During this process I learned that where you put the cut out matters. It may not seem like it but location really helps make the posts look more lively.
This is also part of my social media posts, I made personalized ones for a few seniors. However, this was my favorite one I made. In most of the other photos there was no color besides black and white. For this one it was easier to add colors because of his uniform and because of the boards in the ice rink. When making this I learned to blend my background photos into each other to make it less noticeable that there are three photos in the background.
This photoshoot went with my social media posts. I loved being at the game and taking photos. It was something I like experiencing during my time in high school. Putting myself out there was a bit scary for me but once I got over that I had no problem getting the shots I needed. That’s something big I felt like I learned, you are the one with the camera so don’t worry about everyone around you.
This shot was taken when we were doing a something-from-nothing project. All we had was white paper and lights and we had to turn that paper into something. I felt like this specific photo reminded me of an elephant which I found interesting because it was just crumbled up. I also liked how I set up the lighting to make the shadow appear bigger.
These also go with the something from nothing. I feel like through this whole photoshoot I learned about the importance of lighting. Each photo looks different because I changed up the lighting. The lighting was also a big problem because trying to get the lighting perfect took time to get I also felt like I was just repeating the same lighting for every picture which made me run out ideas. But simply just changing the colors felt like it completely changed what the photo looked like
This cupcake shot was from our cupcake wars that happen at the beginning of the semester. I would say my favorite thing about this shot is the flower pedals. I really liked setting up this shot I just wish that there was more room so you could have seen the pedals better. After this shoot was over I learned to make sure everything was out of the background because it really bothered me that you could see the sheet of paper at the top.
This was the flower lab project. I chose this project because I enjoyed how the colors turned out, they are all pretty vibrant. Also to get this photo I barley had to use any paint even though I thought I would need a lot more. I learned how complicated a simple picture could be. Creating this set up by myself was quite interesting because this project was definitely a two person one but I still made it work.
This photo of Dyvne sliding down the railing was also from the freezing time shoot. I really liked this because I felt like it really froze time. You can really see dyvnes reaction as if you were there when it was happening. I wish there could have been more color in the shot. I learned that to make sure your setting for the lighting are right so your subject doesn’t have to fall a bunch of times.
This has been one of my favorite shots this semester; it was from the ghost photo shoot. I felt that the lighting was perfect with some of the hallway being darker and some parts lighter. I also like how you can see the ghost enough but also can tell it’s supposed to be a ghost shot. I learned that when taking these shots it’s all about communication with the person you are working with.
This was from the photo album practice. Though it was for practice I still loved the photo. I feel like you can really tell that you are in a classroom where they are focused. Sabrina seems to be very focused trying to get her work done on time. One of my favorite things about this photo is that the background is not blurred out so you can see the materials she is using. I feel like it is making the story of what’s happening more clear. I learned that making sure there is a story in the photo is key and don’t just take a photo without a little bit of planning.
This was from when we were working with psdts. My favorite thing about this photo was that it reminds me of the scene's in Wizards of Waverly Place when they transition somewhere. I like the splatters that are behind me, with the background I feel like it looks like there is movement happening. I took what we learned in another project to clash it with the psdts to get the photo I wanted.
This was taken at the beginning of spring for our springies project. This was one of my favorite shots I took that day. I like how green and nature like it was. The photo makes me feel like you're about to go through magical woods. It's kind of like open for what each person sees. I think I learned a lot about settings and how even just a slight change could really change the photo.
This photo was also from the springies shoot. This is probably one of the only nature pictures I have taken and actually liked. I liked how I had my setting down a bit to make it darker in the foreground and lighter in the background. But while it is lighter in the back it is still blurred out and focused on the flowers. I also liked how clear the flower turned out, it is a pretty sharp shot. I feel like during this shoot I learned to get close to nature if you want to see the pretty stuff.
This was also from the toy shoot. I sampled this work because I thought the idea behind it was interesting. Chameleons are normally camouflaging into whatever they are near and I felt like this really emphasized that. I liked how the colors of the blocks turned out and how you can see all the detailing in the blocks. During the shoot I learned to think of the most random things because I was running out of ideas.
This was part of our last project where I did the grid of my trip. I didn't use this for the grid because I didn't see that the photo is interesting. I really like how I took the shot because of a perspective that is not often seen. But I feel like it adds reality into the shot. This was taken when we where leaving and I felt like I didn’t have enough photos so I was just taking pictures of everything I saw. So I would say for an accidental photo it turned out to be pretty good. The most important thing I learned that I will take with me is that there is a story everywhere and you can turn anything into a good photo.
This is from the pick 2 create 8 projects which was one of the firsts we did. Not only do I like the angle of this photo. I also like all of the lines in the photo, there’s a lot of lines that draw your eyes to the center doors. I learned that angle is key and if you used lines make sure your camera is pretty level.
This was also from the flower lab. I chose this work because I loved how the paint fell down. I also liked the background color because it kind of looks like theres a pink background when there’s really not. The blue really stands out compared to all the other colors. I learned that when it comes to these photos in the flower lab it was all about how you edited them, if you wanted to see more color you could if you did not want to you could have edited to de less colorful.
This was from the toy shoot which was really fun to do. I chose this because it felt like party to me. The colors were really what made the photos good, they were vibrant and noticeable. Also having the toys in the center made everything go towards the middle. I learned that to use different color lighting to make the photo have different stories.
