Happy Staff Appreciation Week(s) to all of our wonderful MPS Staff!

With conflicting dates for the official celebration of Staff Appreciation Week, MPS would like to declare May 1-5 AND May 8-12 as Staff Appreciation Weeks! After all, one week is not nearly enough to thank all of you for the time, energy, positivity, creativity, kindness, compassion, and hard work that you do throughout the year to make MPS so great!

Thank you, we appreciate you!

To kick off Staff Appreciation, we would like to say thank you to all of our MPS Principals as we celebrate National School Principal's Day today!

Speaking of great staff, don't forget to nominate a great MPS staff member for a Gerstacker or Distinguished Service Award! The Gerstacker nomination window closes soon - next Friday, May 12th.

Don't Forget - Nominate an excellent MPS Employee for a Gerstacker or Distinguished Service Award!

MPS would like to recognize the achievements of several H.H. Dow High Students!

Senior Emily Ammerman is traveling to Princeton to receive the Princeton Prize in Race Relations for her Persian Immersion Day Program. We are thrilled Emily is being recognized for her efforts and pleased that Dow High, specifically the IB Language and Literature program could support this endeavor. Emily is the founder of Persian Cultural Awareness Day at H.H. Dow High. Being of Persian ethnicity, Emily wanted to provide her classmates with a different positive perspective of Iranians that is normally not portrayed. During her junior year of high school, she presented Persian culture to three IB Language and Literature classes. The presentation was so well received and eye opening for her classmates that the following year, she was asked to present again to the entire junior class of over 300 students; expanding the content, information and presentation length into Persian Cultural Awareness Day. Persian Cultural Awareness Day is a full day event so that all 11th grade students can participate, and it is now a part of the IB Language and Literature curriculum and budget. Emily will record her presentation for future Persian Cultural Awareness Days in the years to come. Great job, Emily!

Senior Thomas Bacigalupo was selected to the All-American Academic swim team. The National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America, Inc., All America Team award, is awarded to approximately 2% of students in high school swim programs across the country! In order to qualify, a high school swimmer needs seven consecutive semesters with a minimum GPA of 3.75 on an unweighted scale. Congratulations, Thomas!

Lillian Blohm
Avery Lehman

Two students in the German program, Lillian Blohm and Avery Lehman, were chosen to participate in the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program (CBYX) for next school year. The CBYX program is a dynamic and immersive exchange program jointly offered by the U.S. and German governments. Lillian and Avery will spend next year living in Germany with host families, attending school, and taking part in conferences that will help them network. The program is designed to strengthen ties between U.S. and German youth, improve their career skills through formal study, and expand their perspectives and awareness of each other's culture, society, history, and politics. The program is highly competitive, so being selected is a great honor. Additionally, it's very rare that two students from the same school are selected. Congratulations and best wishes on your coming adventure!

Congratulations to the 29 Dow High DECA students who represented Michigan DECA at the International Career Development Conference held in Orlando, Florida, April 21-26. These students showcased a variety of skills, knowledge, and creativity. Students also participated in the School Based Enterprise and Thrive Leadership seminars and were able to network and meet with other students from across the globe.

Additionally, students enjoyed spending a day at Walt Disney World and also attended DECA Night at Universal Studios. And to top it all off, Louis Huang placed in the top 20 for his test score in the event of Personal Financial Literacy. Congratulations, Louis, this is truly an amazing accomplishment!

This trip was the perfect ending to Dow High DECA's 50th season!

Once school has ended for the year, Midland Public Schools will once again be offering the Summer eLearning Program. Through this program, online courses are available to high school students who wish to earn initial credit in select courses. If you are interested in Credit Recovery courses this year, please contact your building administration.

While being onsite is not a requirement for daily work or quizzes, tests and exams must be monitored. This can be by appointment onsite or by appointment virtually. Appointments will be scheduled with the teacher on duty between the hours of 9:00 am and 12:00 pm on Mondays - Thursdays unless other arrangements are made. Students should expect to invest 45-60 hours to complete each course but may work on their course at any place where they have an internet connection.

Courses will begin on June 5, 2023, and must be completed by August 4, 2023. Students may only register for one course at a time. The cost for each course is $150 for Standard Edgenuity courses (EDG - Edgenuity on course list) and $235 for Edgenuity Instructional Services courses (EDGIS - Edgenuity Instructional Services on course list) for Midland Public Schools students and $175 or $250 for students outside of the MPS district. Registration opens on April 24th. If you would like additional information or would like to register for a course, use this link: https://www.midlandps.org/parents/elearning
