Back from Christmas Leave

Cadets returned this week from their Christmas Leave, ready to hit the books in the classroom and achieve in athletics.

Inclement Winter Weather on the Way this Weekend

Weather forecasters are predicting a high-impact winter storm to push through central Virginia on Sunday and Monday with accumulations of snow, sleet, and ice predicted for the Fork Union area. This storm follows on the heels of a heavy snowstorm last week that brought down trees and damaged the electric power grid throughout Virginia, causing a multi-day power outage throughout central Virginia. Crews are still in the cleanup and recovery process from that storm and we have been advised that more power outages are likely for Sunday and Monday.

While our campus is well-prepared for power outages, with generators in place in our dining hall, barracks, and infirmary to help maintain needed services such as hot meals, warm shelter, and 24-hour access to health care, we are aware that a storm with such a potential for heavy ice accumulation in particular causes concern and challenges for many of our families, and for our day student families especially.

In light of these concerns, we have taken the proactive step of canceling classes entirely for Monday, January 17, 2022.

This weekend will be an open three-day leave weekend for all cadets who choose to go on leave. This is a non-mandatory, regular leave. There will be no FUMA transportation provided. Cadets may depart on leave at the end of classes on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 1400 hours, unless they have athletic team obligations. Those cadets participating on athletic teams with competition schedules this weekend may depart on leave following their team obligations.

All cadets will return from leave by 1900 hours on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Classes will resume Tuesday morning.

Please monitor your email for further communications. We will keep you updated as our response to this winter storm develops.

Our Yeatman Infirmary Staff

The Fork Union Military Academy campus is blessed to have a wonderful healthcare facility on campus, open and available to cadets 24 hours a day...the Yeatman Infirmary.

Under the supervision of our Head Nurse, Mrs. Heidi Yates, and our Academy Physician, Dr. Randolph Lanford, our nurses help keep our Corps of Cadets safe and healthy throughout the year.

Meet three of our full-time registered nurses...

Sara Gurney

I have been a nurse for 5 years. I came to FUMA in December 2020 and work in VCU's Neuroscience ICU. I also graduated from VA Tech with a Masters degree in Forest Products. I have been married for 24 years and have 3 children.

Melanie Amos

My name is Melanie Amos and my husband is Sam Amos, who teaches English at FUMA. We have 6 children (5 boys and a girl). I spent some time in the Army Reserves, worked as a staff nurse in a hospital in Richmond for 13 years, and came to FUMA in February 2021. We have a little homestead in Louisa county where we raise pigs, goats, and chickens.

Angela Bishop

I’ve been a nurse for 19 years, mostly emergency medicine. I was also UVAs Neonatal Emergency Transport Team for awhile. We traveled to rural areas and delivered preemies, and would transport them to UVA. My husband is a deputy in Fluvanna County and we have 3 children. Kristen is 15, William is 13 and Joseph is 9. In my off time, I love reading true crime documentaries or watching shows about them. I also like to craft - acrylics, crochet, etc.

Dr. Julian H. Yeatman

The Yeatman Infirmary is named in memory of the Academy's first physician, Dr. Julian H. Yeatman (1906-1979).

Parents helping spread the good news

Our parents and other friends of Fork Union Military Academy have been helping spread the good news of our school recently and we appreciate it!

These valued friends have agreed to write one short, positive review about their experience with the Academy on one of the various online reviews sites each month.

Online Review Sites

Reviews don’t need to be long to help the Academy. A short review is much better than no review at all. Simply write a couple of sentences as if you were telling a friend or colleague what you think about your experience.

Bravo Zulu Awards

Every Friday the Fork Union Military Faculty and Staff meet to nominate a few who have exceeded the standards and demonstrated superlative performance. Whilst we have various awards and recognitions - a simple "Well Done!" we hope, is also appreciated. The combination of the Bravo and Zulu nautical signal flags, i.e., Bravo Zulu, also referred to as "BZ," is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flag hoist or voice radio, meaning "Well Done" with regard to actions, operations or performance.

The following are the Bravo Zulu awards for this week:

Cadet Christopher Mulder is a junior and first-year cadet in Bravo Company. He is a boarding student from Sanford, NC and a member of our Prep Football and Track teams. Upon returning from Christmas Leave, Cadet Mulder volunteered to help clean snow and ice off sidewalks and the dining hall pathway and steps before other students arrived. His initiative and hard work ensured cadets arrived at a safe and hazard-free environment. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Mulder!

Cadet Sergeant Colton Childers is a freshman and first-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Isle of Palms, SC. After returning from Christmas Leave, he voluntarily assumed the role of “NCO of the Day”. Cadet Childers fulfilled the commitment with tact and enthusiasm. He was extremely helpful to Commandant Staff and was courteous to family members needing assistance. Bravo Zulu, Sergeant Childers!

Cadet Private Trevor Shirk is a seventh grader and first-year cadet in Charlie Company. He is a boarding student from Mohnton, PA. As he was preparing to depart on leave, Cadet Shirk noticed that it had started raining which threatened to damage an outdoor cadet art display set up for parents as they arrived on campus. Cadet Shirk took the initiative to move the display and supplies indoors to ensure the art his fellow cadets had worked so hard on was not destroyed. Bravo Zulu, Cadet Shirk!

Trustee Scholarship Application Deadline is Approaching

Competitive scholarship covers full tuition

Do you know someone who has a great student who would like to attend Fork Union Military Academy but is concerned about the cost?

New students who will enter grade 8, 9, or 10 in the fall of 2022 and are first-time applicants to the fall program are eligible to compete for Fork Union Military Academy's Board of Trustees Scholarship.

Affordability is a key factor for many families looking at military school, and Fork Union works hard to provide opportunities to as many students as possible. The Academy utilizes need-based financial aid and access scholarship funds to assist as many young men as possible to enroll.

The Board of Trustee Scholarship is unique in that is it competitive and completely need blind. This means that applicants for this scholarship do not need to fill out a financial aid application. The finalists are selected based on the strength of their scholarship and admission applications. Finalists are then invited to campus for an interview with the scholarship committee before the final award is announced.

For more details or to download the scholarship application forms please visit: http://www.forkunion.com/trusteescholarship

Do you want to be a part of our Cadet Corps?

Are you a young man in the 7th to 12th grade? Do you want to be a man known for integrity, respect for yourself and others, faith, character, and discipline?

We encourage you to fill out an application for enrollment and join our cadets here at Fork Union Military Academy.
