Des vétérans nous répondent ...
Voici quelques extraits des mails ou des cartes que nous avons reçus en retour... Nous n'en attendions pas tant !
" [...] to thank y’all for the letter [...] was like receiving a Christmas gift... "
" I write on behalf of my father [...] to thank you [...]. He was very interested to hear about your project and grateful for the words of thanks. [...] He has asked me to pass on his appreciation of your kind words. Dad is 94 years old now and, even though it was nearly 75 years ago, he vividly remembers the Normandy landings and all that followed, especially the liberation of Saint-Aignan [...]. Dad was so pleased to receive the Legion d’honneur from your government a few years ago a medal he is very proud to own and happy to learn that students are still involved with remembrance of the efforts of WW2 veterans."
" [...] Firstly I must complement you on your beautifully clear handwriting and on your perfect English. Your message touched me deeply, and I think it is so important that the people of our two countries should not forget our shared history, and in particular the events which took place almost 75 years ago. I landed on Gold beach at about 7.30 on the morning of 6 June after a very rough crossing from England on a flat bottomed landing craft [...]. It is so pleasing to know that you and your fellow pupils remember us and most importantly those who sadly did not live to tell their stories. [I have received] the award of Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur from the French Consul 2 years ago, an honour of which I am extremely proud. May I wish you every success in your studies, and I thank you again for your kind thoughts."
" In June 1944 my tank landed at Le Hamel/Asnelles. [...] The next day my Sherman tank was sent via Herouville [...] to see if an armoured vehicle could enter the streets of Caen. It was like a voyage on the moon as all the houses had been bombed. [...] It is important to remember the Normandy battles, including the citizens of Caen who died in that bombing raid. We must all understand and avoid the causes and terrors of war. Toujours la liberté ! Toujours l'amitié ! "
