Join us for the 2023 Joe Burrage Memorial Lectureship on April 14th at noon at the Capstone College of Nursing. Dr. Jason Farley, a Capstone College of Nursing Alum and Blackburn Institute Fellow, will present Stigma, Disparities and Health Inequities: How the MPOX 2022 Pandemic Highlights Chronic Infectious Disease Challenges.
Jason E. Farley, PhD, MPH, ANP-BC is the inaugural Endowed Professor of Nursing Leadership and Innovation at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. He established and directs The Center for Infectious Disease and Nursing Innovation, and his work has been funded by NIH, CDC, and HRSA, along with many others. His research, clinical practice and center activities seek to optimize a patient’s movement along the infectious disease care cascade, from their initial diagnostic experience to health system navigation and linkage to care, and strategies to enhance retention in care.
Please RSVP for the lectureship by April 7th. One Nursing CE will be offered to those in attendance, and lunch will be served.
This program honors the memory of Dr. Joe Webb Burrage, Jr., former Assistant Dean at the Capstone College of Nursing, and celebrates the work of male nurse leaders.
2023 Bama Blitz to raise funds for CCN Rural Health Initiatives
At CCN, we are working to prepare nurses that will be the positive change we need to see in rural healthcare. From combating the substance and opioid use epidemic and increasing access to emergency services and telemedicine, to improving mental health primary care integration and increasing rural Alabama COVID-19 vaccination rates, CCN is positively impacting significant rural health issues.
UA's Bama Blitz crowdfunding campaign will kick off at noon on April 18th and conclude at noon on April 20th. Your gift to CCN's Reaching Rural Alabama Support Fund will help our students and faculty affect change through initiatives like community projects, student and faculty research and experiential learning opportunities.
The Capstone College of Nursing is leading the way in Alabama’s rural counties by advocating for policy change, offering services where there is a provider shortage, and using creative research strategies to improve overall health outcomes in Alabama. It is our hope that empowering students with the ability to provide patient-centered, culturally-appropriate care to individuals who otherwise would not have access to health services will create a desire in the next generation of nurses to practice in underserved areas.
We hope you will consider supporting this fund during Bama Blitz. With your help, we can reach our goal to raise $10,000 for the Reaching Rural Alabama Support Fund! More information can be found here.

Donors Making a Difference at CCN
We at the Capstone College of Nursing are proud to work with generous donors to create new opportunities for our College. Currently, we are in the midst of The Rising Tide Capital Campaign, a University-wide effort to raise a minimum of $1.5 billion in philanthropic support for strategic priorities over a 10-year period. As we continue toward our goals during the Campaign, we are honored to highlight some of our donors’ stories.
“I would like for the students to know that there are people who believe in what they are doing and that many of those people want to help,” said Dr. James Woodard. “CCN is a top nursing program and produces the best nurses that I’ve ever worked with. Giving to a scholarship is just one way to help your neighbor.”

“The process and outcome of working with UA and CCN has been so incredibly rewarding,” said Cathy Rudisill. “It has reminded us that after all these years—since my needing financial assistance to attain my college degree—there are still so very many students who are in need… For us, the ability to help these students in any way will be incredibly rewarding."

“At some point in our lives, most of us want to give back and help someone else,” said Cathy Watson. “When that time arises in your life, remember what made a difference to you, what impacted you personally, and take that step.”

“When I was in school, outside financial support provided what I needed so I could stay at Alabama and earn my nursing degree," said Donna Urrutia. "Because of that support, I was able to fulfill my parents’ dream for me. I cannot imagine what would have happened had I not had that funding. I knew what it was like to receive.”
“Now, I know the joy of being a benefactor and I think it is important to share that joy so that others might be motivated by it.”
