The #ProtectEiENow campaign, led by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION TO PROTECT THE RIGHT TO EDUCATION IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS AND PROTRACTED CRISIS. The international community needs to take urgent, concrete and effective measures to ensure transformative, inclusive and equitable quality education for all in emergency contexts – this requires political will and public financing to do so.

Climate-change impacts, conflicts, situations of violence, poverty, persecution and public health emergencies are some of the drivers of these increasingly complex, intertwined and multifaceted crises, which last longer than ever before, with many leading to protracted and cyclical crises and impacting a growing number of people all over the world.

All this has a devastating impact on the right to education of millions of people, resulting in a generation of children and young people who are deprived not only of their right to quality education but also of the protection that education provides in these contexts, where education may be the only safe space. For the most marginalized people, the impact is much greater.

This reality is dramatically impacting the progress of the entire Sustainable Development Agenda, specifically Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). Despite this dire situation, education remains one most underfunded areas of humanitarian aid – just 2,4 % of the global humanitarian funding, far below the 4 % UN target and the 10 % allocated by the European Union.
