Vincenzo Galilei By Emma Schulman

Around 1500 at Santa Maria a Monte, Italy, the famous lutenist, composer, theorist, singer, and teacher Vincenzo Galilei was born. In 1540 he began the study of music in Florence. Galilei established a reputation as a lutenist, then studied at Venice under Gioseffo Zarlino. Galilei met the love of his life, Giulia Ammanta, and married her July fifth, 1562. They settled near Pisa where Galilei spent most of his life, and had eight children. Galilei's oldest child was Galileo, the world famous astronomer.

Galilei published many books of music theory and of sheet music for the lute. He got help from patrons including Jacopo Corsi who was a leading patron of the arts next to the Medicis. Some examples are Fronimo Dialogo, Theorica Musice, and one of his most famous books, Dialogue on Ancient and Modern Music. Dialogue on Ancient and Modern Music was written between 1581-1582, and 500 years later it is still sold around the world. Galilei advanced a new philosophy of music history and theory based on his search for the cold hard facts about music. He was an experimental scientists who was one of the founders of modern acoustics. Acoustics is the branch of physics concerned with the properties of sound. In this book, he says what about music makes people respond to it. Galilei looked about what he thought was the universal music theories, what all music has in common. Dialogue on Ancient and Modern Music was an important and influential for musicians and composers of his age.

During the renaissance, Galilei was closely linked to classism. He looked back at ancient classics and Greeks to help him in his career. His work is also an example of humanism because he believed in the importance of education. Galilei grasped the logical patterns of mathematics and musics.

Galilei examined the ancient Greek study of the mathematics behind music which I never knew and I think is very interesting. He was the father of Galileo, the world famous astronomer, and lived a very interesting life. Galilei lived life looking for the facts and nothing else.
