Foreshadowing - shows liesels understanding of Hans personality right when they met.

This shows that right when Liesel meets Hans, she immediatly saw the friendliness and caring in his eyes. This foreshadows that she and Hans are going to have a good relationship and that Hans is going to be a nice, caring character.

Papas lungs were full of sky (pg. 437)

Metaphor- compares papas lungs with the sky

It shows that even though papa is very close to death he is thinking about sky. He is about to die, but the narrator death, talks about sky which distracts papa.

The conversation of bullets (pg. 175)

Metaphor- compares conversation with bullets

This metaphor is saying that while papa was in the war, people were dying all around him. When he's in conversation, all kinds of people were dying.

A bathrobe answered the door. (Pg. 42)

Personification- bathrobes cannot actually answer doors

This is used to show that Ilsa is not even noticed when she answered the door. The only thing the readers see about her is her clothes.

There were erased pages of Mein Kampf, gagging, suffocating under the paint as they turned. (Pg. 237)

Personification- pages cannot actually gag or suffocate

This shows that Mein Kampf, written by Hitler is "suffocating" under the Jewish writing. It is very ironic because the Jews and Germans were such big enemy's at the time.

There eyes were enormous on in their starving skulls. (Pg. 391)

Imagery- the author is showing how exhausted and hungry the Jews really are.

This is showing that the Jews that are walking are extremely hungry and it shows how mistreated they are. I think it also shows that the Jews are surprised at the fact that no one is helping them out.

Blood streamed till it was dried on the road, and their bodies were stuck there, like driftwood after the flood. (Pg. 12)

Simile- compares bodies to driftwood

This helps people know what it looks like because most people have not seen dead bodies like this, but they know what driftwood looks like, so they can visualize it. It also shows that there were so many bodies and a lot of blood, like in a flood.

... It was raining on Himmel Streetwhen the world ended for Liesel Meminger. The sky was dripping. Like a tap that a child has tried its hardest to turn off , but hasn't quite managed. (Pg. 497)

Simile - compares the world ending to a child not managing to turn off the tap

This shows how Liesel did not want the world to end even though it was on its last straw for her. It also tells how Liesel could not completely stop the bombings like the child could not stop the faucet.

Hard times were coming like a parade. (Pg. 358)

Simile- compares the hard times that were coming to Liesel with a parade

This is showing how so many bad things are happening to Liesel one after another like a parade. It tells how she was happy, but like a parade, a lot of hard times are coming.

Curtains of rain were drawn around the car. (Pg. 27)

Metaphor- compares curtains to rain

This shows how the rain looked so that we, the readers, can visualize it and know what it looks like around the car.
