ROWLAND HALL ATHLETICS // WINTER 2023

Upper School Athletics

Winter brought with it basketball and swimming for 53 Winged Lion student-athletes, and a chance to represent the green and white from November through February. And represent they did—and with pride! The boys basketball team placed second in region play, then played through to the second round of the state 2A tournament. The girls basketball team took fourth in Region 17 and were eliminated in a close first-round state tournament game. The boys swim team placed seventh at the 3A State Championship, with only four competitors, and the girls team took 11th, with a mere five swimmers competing.

Congratulations to our winter sports athletes on these accomplishments, and many kudos to our dedicated coaches, whose expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment were instrumental to the successes. Thanks to Zack Alvidrez, Paulino Beach, and Terrence Drisdom, boys basketball; Bill Tatomer, Stacy Martin, and Kelly Peterson, girls basketball; and Hope Feliciano and Nick Skorut, swimming. Your leadership truly made a difference!

ROWMARK SKI ACADEMY

What a winter it was—snow, snow, and record snow! Many commented to me this winter that we must be having a tremendous ski season with all the snow. Yes, the powder skiing was amazing—no doubt about that! However, what people don’t realize is that ski racing works best with hard, icy snow, which creates fair race conditions for all competitors; we had very little of that. A big shout-out to our coaching staff for all the incredible extra effort of shoveling and slipping the training and race courses daily, and the huge chore of tearing down and resetting b-net before, during, and after every snowstorm to keep our kids safe and productive through the snowiest and most challenging winter season in the history of the Western US.

In the midst of all the snow, we were excited to celebrate Rowmark Ski Academy’s 40th anniversary at our March 11–12 celebration, where current Rowmark families and alumni joined us for a weekend of activities: free skiing with friends, a dual ski race, BBQ tailgating, hors d’oeuvres, remarks, and a slide show at the Utah Olympic Park.

Finally, we could not be more excited about the opening of the phase 2 mountain expansion on the west peak of the Utah Olympic Park this winter. Phase 1 opened in 2019 and has already provided us with a huge upgrade to our training quality and volume, in combination with the Eagle Race Arena at Park City Mountain Resort. Phase 2, called West Peak, is a 1,200-vertical-foot, full-length super-G, giant slalom, and slalom venue, complete with a high-speed quad chairlift, snowmaking, and lights. This is a state-of-the-art game-changer for our Academy and Junior Program teams, and we couldn’t be more grateful to our incredibly generous donors who helped make it a reality.

Todd Brickson, Rowmark Ski Academy Program Director

Rowmark Ski Academy

The 2022–2023 ski racing season was filled with lots (and lots!) of snow, as well as many exciting victories—for current Rowmarkers and for those competing for the US Ski Team and collegiate teams.

Rowmark Junior Program

It was another successful season, both for skill and character development, for the Rowmark Junior Program.

West Peak Expansion Upgrades Rowmark Training

With the completion of West Peak, a state-of-the-art facility at Utah Olympic Park, Rowmarkers will benefit from an even higher level of ski training.
