Your support enriches the Berkeley Engineering student experience.
Currently, more than 6,000 undergraduates are enrolled in Berkeley Engineering. Our students benefit from additional support and early encouragement in their education to make a critical difference in their academic success and to help keep them on their path in engineering and computer science.
Engineering Student Services
Engineering Student Services (ESS) serves the entire College of Engineering student body through programs and support services to ensure students thrive both academically and personally.
ESS Advising
Upon admission, every Berkeley Engineering student is assigned an academic adviser based on their major.
ESS advisors are resources on everything relating to the undergraduate experience, from degree and graduation requirements to academic policies.
PREP/TPREP
The Pre-Engineering Program (PREP) and Transfer Pre-Engineering Program (TPREP) aim to address the achievement gap of students with greater needs, such as first-generation, historically underrepresented, community college transfers, women, and other non-traditional students, while at the same making these programs accessible to the entire undergraduate engineering population.
The Class of 2022
- In 2022, 78% of PREP participants come from an underrepresented community, and 80% are first-generation college students
- 48% of PREP and TPREP participants were female
- Berkeley Engineering's retention rate of PREP students rose to 95% in 2022
I would like to sincerely thank the sponsors of the PREP program for their donations in helping to make this program possible. As a Native-American female, I had no idea what to expect coming into Berkeley Engineering. The PREP program was able to nurture me though and help me grow into the Berkeley Engineering leader that I am today. Because of PREP's resources, I am happy to say that I will be attending grad school for my Master of Engineering at UCI. -Athena L., Bioengineering

Berkeley Mentorship Cohort
To better acclimate our students to the Berkeley community and to generate a virtuous cycle of mentorship, in 2020 an alumnus provided seed funding to pilot the Berkeley Mentorship Cohort (BMC).
There has been substantial student interest in the program with 220 mentees and 120 mentors currently participate.
Current Program Components
Individualized mentoring - Mentors and mentees meet each month throughout the academic year. These meetings will enable students to seek counsel and share aspects of their growth, as well as to inform mentors on how to best support students’ success.
Group mentoring - Pairs of mentors and mentees connect with each other throughout the academic year to develop community and receive specific aid in areas where individualized mentoring may not be sufficient.
Workshops and community-building events - Mentors and mentees may participate in community-building events as well as workshops addressing academic excellence, professional development, leadership and mental and physical wellness.
Staff support and training - The BMC and partners provide training to equip staff members with tools for effective communication, academic excellence and professional development.
Student Organizations
Student organizations provide an enormous benefit to the student population at UC Berkeley. The College of Engineering houses 85 organizations, covering a wide range of special interests including cultural affinity, honor societies, competition teams, and professional development.
Undergraduate organizations are encouraged to participate in the Blue & Gold (B&G) Certification training, a joint effort of the Engineering Student Council and Engineering Student Services. Through the B&G program, student clubs are coached on diversity topics and are encouraged to be inclusive in their membership recruiting practices.
Student groups that meet the criteria for the certification are eligible for funding through ESS, incentivizing student clubs to demonstrate the values of B&G with their decisions and actions.
Student Wellness
We provide a wide range of wellness services and programs at ESS that address student wellness holistically. Initiatives aim to support mental, emotional and physical wellness.
Activities span from self-directed resources to peer and faculty support to yoga and knitting!
At the core of Berkeley Engineering’s mission are values that drive the college to educate inclusive leaders and create knowledge equitably in service of a diverse society. We have developed a strong portfolio of programs and initiatives to ensure that engineering benefits everyone.
