Simply beautiful: learn to create easy minimalist wall decor Anna Diorio '23 Paper Arts Editor

Often times we search for sophisticated, embellished things, that are usually expensive, to make our homes beautiful. Yet, beautiful is not synonymous with upscale, extravagant or complex. Minimalist art is an example of something that can be simple whilst still having the ability to make a room feel elegant and refined. And by following this straightforward tutorial, you can make your own minimalist wall decor at a low cost and in a short amount of time.

For this project, you will need the following materials:

  • watercolor paper
  • a few watercolor pencils (color of your choice)
  • a pen (suggest using gel pen)
  • a few paint brushes (optional: use different sizes)
  • a small bowl of water

Below is the tutorial, which uses an example of the type of design you may create. However, you are allowed, if not encouraged, to take any direction you would like. If you need inspiration, Pinterest is a great platform to start searching on.

Start by taking a sheet of watercolor paper and using your watercolor pencils to create a mock paint pallet like the one pictured above. Then, dip your paintbrush into the water and wet the color you intend to use first. You may use whichever color you would like.
Take your paintbrush and create organic shapes that create a vague outline of the flower being drawn. For example, the purple shapes on the left outline what will be a lavender plant. There are no other specific rules that you must follow when creating these shapes. Just let your creativity run free.
After the paint has dried, which should only take a few minutes, use your pen to draw flowers around the watercolor shapes. These flowers aren't meant to be perfect nor are they supposed to align with the borders of the watercolor shapes.

This step is optional, but I added a simple quote to embellish the piece.
Below you will find several other examples of different designs you can create.
Art can be however you picture it. There are no strict guidelines for any of these drawings, so feel free to use your imagination, it can help add character to your work.
This simple and minimalistic wall decor tutorial can help individuals personalize their home without spending a fortune. Remember, there is beauty in simplicity.
