WHOLE SCHOOL READING CHALLENGE

On Monday we are launching a new whole school reading challenge to encourage the children's enjoyment of reading for pleasure.

Each classroom is going to have their own reading tree on display. When they reach each of the following milestones, the children will be able to physically hang their named leaf on the tree.

  • 30 reads = a bronze leaf, a bronze keyring and a certificate .
  • 50 reads = a silver leaf, a silver keyring and a certificate
  • 100 reads = a shiny golden leaf to hang on the tree and a golden keyring and certificate.

Please support your children with the challenge by ensuring each read is recorded in their normal reading records or planners. Staff will check the planners and reading records each week.

EYFS, KS1 and KS2 hook books

READING WELL

A recent study of 10,000 families in the UK suggested primary school children were much more troubled by lockdown than secondary school pupils.

If you are concerned about the mental health of a child in your care, we recommend exploring Reading Well for Children; a list of books recommended to help children understand their feelings and worries and cope with tough times. The books have been chosen by children, carers, health experts and librarians and are targeted at children in Key Stage 2, but there are also titles aimed at a wide range of reading levels to support less confident readers, and to encourage children to read together with their siblings and carers. Click here to find out more.

You can borrow these books free from every East Riding Library, and it's free to join the library online.

KIDS CLUB OFSTED

We are delighted to share the results of the Kids Club Ofsted inspection which took place at the beginning of December. Inspectors have confirmed that they have retained the 'Good' status from the previous inspection. There is lots to celebrate, with comments such as "The club is welcoming and calm, and children arrive happily"; children "chat contentedly with their friends" and "Staff are calm and positive role models." Well done everyone!

TESTING CHANGES

The government have announced that confirmatory PCR tests following a positive lateral flow device (LFD) test result are to be temporarily suspended from Tuesday 11 January. This will mean that anyone who receives a positive LFD test result will be required to self-isolate immediately and will not be required to take a confirmatory PCR test. Click the button below to read the full details.

Please remember that LFD tests are for those without Covid-19 symptoms only. Please book a PCR test if you or your child displays any of the following:

  • a high temperature – this means your child may feel hot to touch on their chest or back (you do not need to take their temperature with a thermometer)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if they usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
  • a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste – this means they may tell you that they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different.

To book a free PCR test, visit the NHS website or phone the NHS on 119.

You can book a test at a testing site, or by asking for a home testing kit to be sent in the post.
