Officer use of deadly force investigation
Salem, Ore. — At approximately 12:37 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2022, Salem Police officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in northeast Salem. The driver did not stop for officers. The vehicle ultimately drove to Northgate Park in the 3200 block of Northgate AV NE where it was stopped in a field. During contact with the occupant, a confrontation ensued, and shots were fired.
At this time, the investigation suggests that at least one Salem officer fired their duty weapon. Officers provided immediate first aid to the individual who was transported to Salem Health. The driver later died of his injuries.
Additionally, a dog inside the vehicle was injured and on-scene first aid was also provided to the injured dog by officers.
Oregon State Police is the primary investigating agency. After a preliminary investigation, four Salem officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, per Senate Bill 111 protocols and department policy.
The decedent’s information will not be released pending family notification. Officer names will not be released at this time.
No further information will be released by Salem Police. All future media releases will be provided by the Oregon State Police.
