Meet the senior Management team

Mandy Burns - Informatics Head of Patient Services

Mandy Burns, is the Informatics Head of Patient Services which covers Clinical Coding, Health Records and Data Quality across all MFT Sites.

Mandy has over 30 years’ experience within the Health Service predominately in the Health Informatics environment. Mandy joined MFT in Feb 2020 from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool where she had a varied role managing Health Records, Transcription and the lead for the Trusts Outpatient Digitisation programme. Mandy has worked in General, Specialist and Acute Hospitals as well as within the Community Health Settings.

Outside of work Mandy is the Chief Executive of IHRIM (Institute of Health Records & Information Management) who deliver the National Clinical Coding Exam (NCCQ). Mandy is passionate about the Health Informatics Profession and also works on the Board of both National and International organisations who promote Health Informatics education, development and standards.

Jay Mclauchlan acc - Head of coding - Trustwide

Jay has 15 years of NHS experience, initially joining the MFT as a Trainee Coder in 2006, Jay progressed to become a Senior Clinical Coder in 2009, before becoming Deputy Clinical Coding Manager in 2010, then moving onto become one of the trusts Coding Improvement Managers in 2012 before moving to his current role as Head of Coding for Wythenshawe Hospital in 2016.

Jay became Head of Coding Trust Wide after the merger of Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General and Central Manchester in 2019.

Jay has coded a wide variety of clinical specialties during his time in clinical coding and this helped him achieve his Accredited Clinical Status in 2009.

Sam Levy ACC - Deputy Head of Coding - Operational & Coding Improvement

Sam joined the NHS as a Clinical Coder in 2015 and progressed to Senior Clinical Coder in 2018. Sam was appointed as the Trust's Coding Improvement Manager in 2021 and progressed to Deputy Head of Coding covering Operational Delivery and Coding Improvement in 2022.

Sam has coded a broad range of specialties in his coding career to date, including Stem Cell Transplant, Clinical Haematology, Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, Renal Transplant. He progressed to the role of Team Leader in 2019 giving him a wide variety of experience within the department.

Sam became an Accredited Clinical Coder in 2018.

Helen Davidson ACC - Deputyead of Coding - Training & Audit

Helen is an NHS Digital certified Experienced Clinical Coding Trainer and is also an approved coding auditor (one of only a small group of individuals who currently hold both qualifications). Helen joined MFT as Clinical Coding Training & Audit Manager in 2016. Helen was appointed as Deputy Head of Coding, responsible for the department's Training and Audit programmes in 2022.

Throughout an NHS career spanning some 30 years, Helen has worked across a number of acute NHS trusts and clinical coding academies alongside working with the Institute of Health Records & Information Management (IHRIM) as Clinical Coding Lead and as a contributing writer of the National Clinical Coding Qualification examinations.

Helen believes that a desire and enjoyment in ongoing learning is the basis for a successful clinical coder.

The Clinical Coding Training Team ensure the successful induction of all new clinical coding staff in the trust and the ongoing professional development of the established coding team. Providing ongoing advice, enhanced mentorship and query resolution alongside the delivery of a structured programme of (coding academy approved) classroom training to ensure all MFT Clinical Coding team members are continually developed and supported to achieve Accredited Clinical Coder status.

Joy Phillips acc - Clinical Coding Training & Audit Manager

Joy became an approved Clinical Coding Auditor in July 2019 and took on the auditor post in August of the same year.

She began working in the NHS as a Data Quality Officer in 2009 at Salford Royal, changing roles to become a clinical coder in 2013 and passed the National Clinical Coding Qualification in 2016.

She moved to MFT in 2016 and took on a management secondment in 2018 so has a wide variety of experience in the clinical coding industry.

Joy has also recently qualified as a Clinical Coding Trainer and was appointed as the Training and Audit Manager.

CLINICAL CODING AUDIT TEAM

The Clinical Coding Audit team are responsible for the quality assurance of the team's coded data, ensuring adherence with national coding standards as well as national & local policy/guidance.

Ongoing assurance of the quality of the trusts clinically coded data is essential to ensure that the department is continuing to meet the data requirements for MFT, ensuring accurate recording of the trusts clinical casemix to support the credibility of the data being used to support the trusts clinical, operational & financial processes that have clinically coded data at their core.

The audit team are a key element of the support we provide to all MFT clinical coder's to ensure that they are well trained & supported to undertake continuous professional development.

Catherine Jones ACC - Clinical Coding Auditor - WTWA

Catherine joined the NHS as a Clinical Coder at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2015 after 18 years working in historic environment conservation.

She gained Accredited Clinical Coder status with distinction in 2017. Catherine has coded a range of specialties including Obstetrics, Gynaecology, ENT and Oral Surgery, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, General Surgery, Elderly Medicine, Diabetic Medicine and Gastroenterology.

Appointed as a Trainee Clinical Coding Auditor in 2019, Catherine is working towards qualification through the Approved Clinical Coding Auditor Programme.

emma jameson acc - Trainee clinical coding auditor - nmgh

Emma began working in the NHS in 2005 in the medical records department at North Manchester General Hospital, in 2008 she joined the Clinical Coding department as a Trainee Clinical Coder.

Since her career in Clinical Coding began, Emma has coded a wide range of specialties, gaining the experience and knowledge to become an Accredited Clinical Coder by passing her National Clinical Coding Qualification in in 2013 with distinction, leading to the role of Senior Clinical Coder.

Emma moved to MFT by joining the MFT Training & Audit Team as a Trainee Clinical Coding Auditor and is currently working towards becoming an Approved Clinical Coding Auditor.

Rachel Costello ACC - Trainee Clinical Coding Auditor - ORC

Rachel's NHS career started in 2014, becoming a Clinical Coder in 2016 and achieving her ACC qualification in 2018.

During her Coding career, Rachel has a built up a broad range of experience coding a number of different specialties in both the NHS and private healthcare organisations. She has also mentored a number of novice and junior Coders.

Rachel joined MFT in 2022 as a Trainee Clinical Coding Auditor and is now working towards becoming an Approved Clinical Coding Auditor.

The Clinical Coding Improvement team undertake an externally focused role, working closely with lead clinicians & senior managers to ensure the importance of Clinical Coding is understood & maintains a high profile throughout the trust.

Their main responsibilities include clinical engagement, validation of coded data, development of coding data capture solutions, promotion of the coding agenda & the development of service improvement measures to align with the trusts Coding Improvement strategy.

Angela ogden ACC - clinical coding improvement facilitator - Trustwide

Angela has 28 years of NHS experience, 17 of which have been spent in Coding roles at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Angela initially joined MFT as a Clinical Coder back in 2004, achieving Accredited Clinical Coder status in 2008 which ultimately resulted in a Senior Clinical Coder role in 2009. In 2013 Angela progressed to Directorate Coding Lead for the Surgical Division before taking up her current position of Clinical Coding Improvement Facilitator in 2016.

Angela has coded a broad range of specialties including Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Vascular, Burns, Plastics, General Medicine, Pain Medicine & Oncology.

The Clinical Coding Team Leaders are leaders of the divisional coding teams, developing and maintaining the departments strong culture of teamwork.

Alongside the operational management they carry out, the Team Leaders also mentor their coding staff, providing 1st line coding query resolution & provide the key link with the operational management teams within their division.

Peter Anderson acc - team leader - manchester royal infirmary - surgical Specialties

Peter joined the NHS in 2015 as a Trainee Clinical Coder role at Wirral University Hospital before moving to the Royal Liverpool Hospital in 2017. Peter joined MFT Clinical Coding as a Senior Clinical Coder in 2019. Peter is currently Team Lead for Manchester Royal Infirmary surgical specialties.

Peter has coded a diverse range of specialities across his career including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Urology, Nephrology, Renal Transplant and Haematology.

Peter achieved Accredited Clinical Coder status in 2018.

Daniel Conway ACC - Team Leader - St Mary's Hospital & Manchester royal Eye hospital

Dan's career in the NHS began in 2005 as a Coding Assistant and progressed to a Trainee Clinical Coding role in 2006. Following this, Dan gained the role of Senior Clinical Coder in 2009. Dan is currently Team Lead for St Mary's Hospital and Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, supporting a team of nine clinical coders.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dan celebrated the birth of his first child Catherine Lily – Kitty for short - born in our very own St Marys Hospital in December 2018. Dan is very proud to work for MFT and to be a part of the fantastic level of care we provide, he hopes to continue to do so for many years to come.

Dan achieved Accredited Clinical Coder status in 2009.

Janet Morrison ACC - Team leader - manchester royal infirmary - medical specialties

Janet has over a decade of NHS experience, starting her career as a Ward Clerk in 2010. Jan became a Clinical Coder in 2012 and qualified as an Accredited Clinical Coder in 2017. Jan joined MFT as a Team Leader in 2022.

Jan has coded a number of medical and surgical specialties during her career, as well as mentoring coders through their novice period.

Bev Hall acc - team leader - wythenshawe

Bev has 23 years of NHS experience, 17 of which have been spent in clinical coding.

Bev joined the MFT Clinical Coding in 2004 as a Clinical Coding Assistant, before progressing to the role of Clinical Coder 6 months later. Bev then progressed to the role of Team Leader for Wythenshawe in December 2013.

Bev has coded a wide range of specialities including Burn and Plastics, General Surgery, Respiratory Medicine, Paediatrics, Acute Medicine, Elderly Medicine, Medical Oncology, Rheumatology, Breast Surgery, Gynaecology, Urology, Emergency Medicine, Cystic Fibrosis and Gastroenterology.

Bev achieved Accredited Clinical Coder status in 2008.

michelle thomas acc - team leader - wythenshawe hospital

Michelle has worked in the NHS for a total of 23 years, 20 of which I have been in MFT Clinical Coding in a variety of roles, resulting in her current position of Team Leader at Wythenshawe.

Michelle has coded a variety of specialties including Trauma & Orthopaedics, Vascular surgery, Gynaecology, Cardiology, Thoracic Med , General surgery , Burns &Plastic Surgery, Urology, ENT. Maxillofacial surgery, Breast Surgery, Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, Acute medicine , Elderly Medicine.

Michelle achieved her Accredited Clinical Coder status in 2011.

With a coding team of 74 based across 7 hospitals, MFT has one of the largest coding teams in the country.

Our team have an abundance of skills & knowledge of the many varied & complex specialties that makes life as an MFT coder challenging, but ultimately very rewarding.

MFT coders are very helpful & always willing to share their expertise with colleagues, helping to ensure the continued high qualitative standards that the department consistently achieves across such a diverse workload.

Our hospitals

RoYal manchester children's hOspital

The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH) provides specialist healthcare services for children & young people throughout the North West, as well as nationally & internationally.

The hospital see's over 40,000 inpatient admissions a year across a range of specialties including oncology, haematology, bone marrow transplant, burns, metabolics, neurosurgery & spinal surgery. With 371 beds it is the largest single-site children's hospital in the UK.

Manchester Royal Infirmary

The Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) was formed in 1752, it is a large teaching hospital for Manchester University's Medical School and a specialist regional centre for kidney and pancreas transplants, haematology and sickle cell disease. Our Heart Centre is a major provider of cardiac services in the region, specialising in cardiology & cardiothoracic surgery. The A&E department see's around 145,000 patients each year.

The MRI can boast many medical breakthroughs, the most recent being the first hospital in the UK to carry out urology surgery using a handheld robotic device and fully 3D system.

The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH) provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond.

The MREH provides an extensive range of services and facilities for both adults and children, these include the Emergency Eye Centre, Acute Referral Centre, Opthalmic Imaging, Ultrasound Unit, Electrodiagnosis, Laser Unit, Optometry, Orthoptics, Ocular Prosthetics & the state-of-the-art Manchester Eye Bank.

Mancheter Royal Eye Hospital marked its 200th anniversary in 2014.

Saint mary's hospital

Saint Mary's Hospital (SMH) was founded in 1790 and, over the years, has successfully developed a wide range of world class medical services for women, babies and children as well as a comprehensive Genetics Centre and an internationally recognised teaching and research portfolio. SMH leading edge services are tailored to meet the needs of the local population in Central Manchester and patients with complex needs referred from other areas.

SMH is a Regional Centre of Excellence committed to providing the highest quality of care to patients and their families from the North West and beyond.

Trafford general hospital

Trafford General Hospital (TGH) is a district general hospital in Davyhulme, providing healthcare services including, Diabetes, General Surgery, General Medicine, Childrens services, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Elderly Care, Respiratory Medicine & ENT to a population of over 200,000 in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester.

Trafford General Hospital (previously known as Park Hospital) is regarded as the first National Health Service hospital, it was visited by Aneurin Bevan, Minister for Health, on 4th July 1948 at the start of the NHS (see photo above).

The University Dental Hospital of Manchester (UDHM) is one of the key specialist dental hospitals in the UK. Around 90,000 patients, both adults and children, come to UHDM for treatment every year.

UHDM is situated on the Manchester University Campus and brings together a wide range of experts from the University Dental School & MFT, it is responsible for training the next generation of dentists and dental professionals.

wythenshawe hospital

Wythenshawe Hospital is a major acute teaching hospital, Wythenshawe is recognised as a centre of clinical excellence and providing district general hospital services and specialist tertiary services to our local community.

Fields of specialist expertise – including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care services – not only servicing the people of South Manchester, but helping patients from across the North West and beyond.

We are recognised in the region and nationally for the quality of our teaching, research and development. Our major research programmes focus on clinical and academic strengths in cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular, wound management and medical education.

NORTH MANCHESTER GENERAL HOSPITAL

North Manchester General Hospital is located in Crumpsall, 3.5 miles north of Manchester City Centre and is now part of the wider family of MFT hospitals creating a Single Hospital Service for Manchester.

The hospital offers a full range of general and acute surgical services and is the base for the region’s specialist infection disease unit, the hospital site was originally three separate hospitals, namely Crumpsall Hospital, Springfield Hospital and Delaunays Hospital and now is the only hospital in North Manchester.

A huge redevelopment programme is on the horizon as we plan a new hospital and wider health and care campus being built as part of ‘once-in-a-generation’ plans to transform both the hospital and the North Manchester area, creating new jobs, promoting healthy lifestyles, developing skills for the benefit of the local neighbourhood and beyond.
