Newsletter T4 W4 Bangalow Public School

Jingi Walla - Welcome!

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung nation. We are grateful for the winding creek - Balun - and the Bangalow Palm trees, that are not just pretty but also a source of food, water and materials for the Arakwal people. We are thankful we can learn whilst we play on this land. We respect and love our Jugan - land. We treat all elders with jarima (pronounced Garima) - respect. We will take action to protect, unite and connect with Country.

Kindy orientation

Over the last three weeks, Bangalow Public School has enjoyed welcoming our new Kindergarten 2023 students. They have participated in our Orientation Program, getting to know our school setting, making connections with their Year 5 Buddies and making new friends.

K-2 Fire station Visits

We'd like to thank the Bangalow Fire Station staff for giving up their time to provide fire safety education to groups of students from K-2 over the past couple of weeks. We especially enjoyed learning about the fire truck and using the siren and fire hose!

Bangalow Show student entries

As per the information provided in last week's newsletter, all students will be preparing entries, including an entry for handwriting, poetry and art to reflect the ‘horse’ theme for this year’s show.

The school is covering the cost and organising ONE entry per student. Each student will select which entry they want to submit out of their handwriting, poetry or art.

The other entries students have prepared will be sent home TUESDAY 15th November (Week 6). If you would like to enter these other pieces, parents will need to deliver them and cover the entry cost ($1 per entry) at the Showground Office with student name, age (age they are at the time of the show) and category of the entry on the back of each entry by 4:00pm on WEDNESDAY 16th November.

Below is also information about the Lego category should your child like to take part.

enrolments

As the year quickly draws near to end, we ask you to please inform the school as soon as possible if you know that your child will not be at Bangalow PS next year. We rely on accurate enrolment information to form the basis of our staffing and class organisation. We appreciate your help in this matter.

Kindergarten 2023

If you have a child and are yet to enrol in Kindy for next year, please contact the school via phone or email to begin your Kindergarten enrolment process, or you can ENROL ONLINE. Similarly, if you know of any local families who may be looking to enrol, please encourage them to do so. In this way we can inform them of information sessions and transition dates.

Ethics teachers needed at Bangalow PS for 2023

Primary Ethics was started in 2010 to offer NSW primary school students philosophical ethics as an alternative to attending non-scripture classes. Ethics classes are now offered in 500 schools around the state, all taught by volunteers. Classes teach children how to think logically, disagree respectfully, support arguments with evidence and think about decisions that affect them and people around them.

The program has been very successful at Bangalow Public School. This year we have eight ethics classes covering Kindy to Year 6, teaching more than 150 students. Due to increasing demand each year, new volunteer teachers are always needed.

To meet demand for ethics classes in K-6 next year, we need at least four new ethics teachers ready to begin at the start of 2023. Bangalow's ethics teachers include school parents, grandparents and local community members. You don't need previous experience teaching or working with children, all ethics teachers are fully trained to deliver the highly structured, age-appropriate Primary Ethics curriculum. Classes are 30 minutes once a week on Tuesday afternoons (2.45-3.15pm) during the school term.

If you're interested in becoming an ethics teacher, or if you know anyone that might be interested, please get in touch, or go to www.primaryethics.com.au to learn more. We look forward to seeing you next year.

IS YOUR CHILD CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY?

If you would like to send something for your child to share with their classmates, please only send in purchased 99-100% juice ice blocks, as many of our students have allergies to various substances that could trigger an anaphylactic reaction. It is for this reason that we also ask that students do not share their food with other children. Thanks for your cooperation - the safety of all students is our first priority.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

FIRST AID AT SCHOOL

If your child is injured at school, staff are trained to apply basic first aid. As we deal with many minor injuries on a daily basis, please advise the school if you DO NOT wish for us to use Stingose (for insect bites), Bandaids or antiseptic cream (such as Savlon, for minor cuts and grazes) on your child. Most injuries simply require cleaning and/or an ice pack. We will make every effort to contact you should the injury be more serious than this.

If your child has a known health condition, please be sure to keep the school abreast of any changes to their condition and how we can best support them at school.

selective high school enrolment 2024

Information has been sent to parents/carers of students in Year 5 regarding entry to selective high schools in Year 7 in 2024. The application website has opened, and closes on 16 November 2022. This process is only relevant to you if you wish to apply for enrolment in 2024 into an agricultural high school, Aurora College (virtual selective high school) or one of the high schools offering academically selective classes for high potential and gifted students. There are 17 fully selective high schools and 25 partially selective high schools in NSW - our nearest ones are Grafton, Armidale and Tamworth, however students enrolling at any rural or remote high school may apply for entry to Aurora College to study online. You do not need to complete this process to enrol your child at a local high school. Please don't hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions. If you DO choose to apply, please be sure to return the 'intention to apply' form to our school, thank you.

student transport 2023

2023 school travel applications are now open

Applications for student travel in 2023 open from Monday 10 October 2022.

Students who need a School travel pass for 2023 can apply now. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).

Students who change address, school, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2023 school year.

If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.

Travel from Term 1 2023

We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid School Travel Pass, from the start of the school year. Applications for 2023 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel open at the start of Term 4 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.

The start of the year is a busy period for local transport operators, and students travelling without a valid pass make service planning and operations difficult. We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a Travel Pass for the start of term - parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.

Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid pass, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.

Sending an absence notification to school?

please don't just write "sick"!

When your child is absent from school, please advise us of the reason as soon as possible. You can do this with a simple phone call to the office, or by completing an Absentee Form in the School Stream app. If you are reporting the absence electronically, or responding to our automated SMS (which is sent out at 11am each day to parents of students who are absent without an explanation), please be sure to leave a detailed reason. If your child is unwell, please provide some further information so we don' t have to follow up with another phone call (e.g. "cold/flu", "headache", "tummy bug", etc).
