Professional Internship Unit Preparation and being ready to start!

We respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which Swinburne’s Australian campuses are located in Melbourne’s east and outer-east, and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

We are honoured to recognise our connection to Wurundjeri Country, history, culture, and spirituality through these locations, and strive to ensure that we operate in a manner that respects and honours the Elders and Ancestors of these lands.

We also respectfully acknowledge Swinburne’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, students, alumni, partners and visitors.

We also acknowledge and respect the Traditional Owners of lands across Australia, their Elders, Ancestors, cultures, and heritage, and recognise the continuing sovereignties of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nations.

Purpose? To prepare for your internship experience, ensure you feel confident to thrive, and to support you in developing a plan for this unit

How? By examining different case studies and scenarios, reflecting and identifying key lessons, and planning for the Internship experience and unit.

Questions to consider:

  • What do you think doing this internship involves? If you're not sure, how would you find out?
  • How can you prepare for your first day at the internship?
  • What concerns do you have and why?
  • How do I make the most of my internship?

Thinking through some scenarios

For each scenario:

  • What do you think the key issues or concerns are?
  • What are some steps the student could take?
  • What support do you think would be available? Who could the student seek support from?

Making a plan

Think about what you already know works well for you... or things you'd like to try.

What are some things you can do now to set yourself up well for the semester?

What are some things you can do during the semester to thrive and make the most of this internship experience?

Who can you seek support or advice from?

Do you have ideas about what you'll do if things don't go to plan in the internship or during the semester?

Thank you!
