UDIS NEWSLETTER ISSUE #6

Pre/K1: The world around us! - We have been exploring maps and how unique we are in our own way. There has been lots of inquiry opportunities for the learners to learn about themselves and others. We have been bringing different talents through show and tell and enjoyed creating maps of our house. Tune in for more through our Toddle observations.
Y1: Loving our maths - We love Maths in Year 1, especially when we play games. Playing different Maths games allows us to use our thinking and inquiry skills. For this game, the students were trying to identify the missing part to a number bond of 10 using double-sided counters and part-whole models. Well done Year 1!
Y3: Protecting ourselves from rain - The central idea of our current UOI is ‘The different parts of the Earth affect how people live and work together and where they settle’. Focusing on the key concept of function, the students were challenged to work together to build a small shelter that would be protected from the rain. Then we put a doll in the shelter and threw some water on the shelter to simulate rain. Do you think the doll got wet? It did, and as a result the students learnt from this experience.
Y5/6: Navigation for explorers - Our class has been finding out how explorers were able to navigate around the world before the computer age. In maths, we can now add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. We have also been learning about food and nutrition and learners were challenged to design a nutritious main meal for themselves.
Y9/10: Learning to collaborate - Year 9/10 students participated in various collaboration activities throughout the MYP. This helps them enhance their 21st century skills, prepares them for life outside of the classroom, helps them work with others and improves their learning.

EAL: Places in towns

Learners in Year 2 have begun learning about places in towns. We have had different vocabulary activities to help us understand the meaning of the new words that we have been learning. We have been demonstrating the learner profile ‘risk-taker’ because we always have a go at reading and writing unfamiliar words using the sounds we already know.

Student council - Student council was able to further develop their leadership and communication skills by organising and managing the MYP activity day. The event was a great success and a good start to the half-term break.
