Headmaster's Newsletter Friday 2nd December 2022

Dear Parents,

During our Wellbeing assembly on Tuesday morning, Mr Neal told the boys about a scene in the HBO series ‘The West Wing’: a conversation between President Bartlet’s Chief of Staff, Leo McGarry, and his Deputy Chief of Staff, Josh Lyman. Those who have seen the programme (and if not, why not?) may remember that Josh experiences a traumatic episode at the end of the first season, which leads to him needing a bit of extra support. While Josh gets that support, Leo stays on at the White House until it has finished. When Josh expresses surprise that Leo has done this, Leo answers:

This guy's walking down a street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep, he can't get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, "Hey you, can you help me out?". The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up, "Father, I'm down in this hole, can you help me out?". The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by. "Hey Joe, it's me, can you help me out?". And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, "Are you stupid? Now we're both down here." The friend says, "Yeah, but I've been down here before, and I know the way out."

It is a phenomenal piece of writing, and a classic of its kind from the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin. It brings attention to a deep bond between two characters who are, at times, brusque, preoccupied, and under a great deal of stress. But, fundamentally, when one of them needs the other, they are there for them. While the boys won’t be watching ‘The West Wing’ for another few years, I hope they remember Leo’s little story.

They are at NCS for nine years of their educational lives, which is quite some chunk of time. During this time, they will develop strong friendships. But even strong friendships can come under pressure when we are busy, tired, short of time, and sometimes in need of a little break. (I am aware that, with a week’s break, the boys have been in one another’s company for twelve weeks in a row now!). I hope that what we teach here helps the boys to understand how interpersonal relationships work, and that appropriate expectations in those relationships will lead to them becoming secure in the long-term. Quite often we get a gaggle of NCS alumni coming back to the gate on Savile Road and, quite often, they are still in their old friendship groups quite some years after they have left at thirteen. I know of several old NCS boys in their thirties and forties who are still best friends with their best friends from here. This is worth remembering when we can become fixated on grades and standardised scores: a large part of education is learning how to coexist with others, even those to whom we might not necessarily automatically warm, and how to nurture friendships that are going to be a source of great joy and solace as the boys go through the rest of their lives.

Have a great weekend, and do check in on an old school friend.

We are looking forward to our carol services next week. Please note that all boys should come to school in full school uniform on both days. On Wednesday, for those boys who have Games in the afternoon, they should bring in their kit separately and there will be an opportunity to get changed in school after the service. Apologies in advance for any lost socks. Tickets for carol services are being sent home from the office via your sons. Please be in touch with office@newcollegeschool.org if any go awry (tickets, not sons) or if you have any questions.

Next Thursday, 8 December, is our Christmas Jumper Day, raising money for Save the Children. It is the customary £2 if boys would like to wear a Christmas jumper – taste optional. They are also welcome to wear Christmas hats and/or socks. Please do not go to any great expense for this, nor feel any pressure to take part; borrowed/old jumpers are totally fine. Thursday is also the day for our NCSPA Christmas Fair in the sports hall. Many thanks in advance to all those parents, carers and friends who have worked so hard to put together such a special event for the boys.

On Monday, Year 4 made their way to the Ashmolean. The boys have been looking at Ancient Greece in Greats and this was an amazing opportunity to visit different galleries. To have such a display of wonderfully preserved and varied pots, sculptures and artefacts on display at such an accessible location creates an immersive experience for the boys. They had a great morning looking at the different types of pots and being awestruck by the incredible sculptures. The boys were enthusiastic, well behaved, and thoroughly enjoyed their visit. My thanks to Pip Usher for organising such a worthwhile trip.

On Tuesday, the Year 7s and Year 8s engaged happily on Tuesday with an entertaining story performed entirely in French by the Onatti Theatre Company. Max B and Didrik joined the cast and acted alongside them, providing further top-class entertainment with their French and acting skills. ‘La maison hantée’ (‘The Haunted House’) was funny, accessible through visual clues, loads of actions and repetition, with modern touches and opportunities to join in to please everyone. The experience was enjoyed by all; my thanks to Catherine Phillips for organising this special event.

We had a wonderful Pre-Prep Winter Concert on Thursday evening, with a large number of boys performing confidently and beautifully – some of them for the first time. It was great to be able to welcome so many parents, grandparents and friends to the concert, and it warmed all our hearts on an otherwise perishingly cold afternoon! My thanks to Isobel Rose for putting the concert together, to Tom Neal for his accompaniment, and to all our VMTs for preparing the boys so well.

From Kate Lam, our NCS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Rep: This Saturday, 3 December, is the International Day of People with Disabilities. This event was launched in 1992 by the United Nations with the aim of raising awareness of disability issues and empowering diverse and accessible communities for all. At NCS, we pride ourselves on being inclusive and embracing individuality. We can help our children understand barriers that are faced by people with disabilities and encourage them to champion the rights of individuals with disabilities. Children are naturally curious and they may ask questions about people with disabilities in public. Dr Terry Cumming, Associate Professor in Special Education in the School of Education at UNSW, suggests that the way in which we respond to children’s questions will influence their perception of individuals with disabilities. Talking in a hushed voice, or ignoring children’s questions, can convey the message that disabilities are embarrassing and shameful. Instead, approaches that enable understanding in a neutral tone can support a culture of acceptance and recognition of diversity.

A reminder that next Tuesday (6 December) is the last day of this term’s after-school Enrichment Activities; they will recommence on the first day of Hilary: Wednesday 4 January.

Please put in your diaries the dates for next term’s parents’ evenings. These formally start at 18.00 (or 17.30 for pre-prep), though scome colleagues are usually available slightly earlier if you’d like to make an early start. We ask parents to make appointments with specific teachers at a separate time if they think that they will need longer than a c.5-minute discussion. Many thanks. Year 3 and Year 8S: Wednesday 11 January. Year 4: Wednesday 25 January. Year 5: Wednesday 1 March. Year 8: Wednesday 8 March. Pre-Prep: Wednesday 22 March. https://www.newcollegeschool.org/parents-evenings

Please find attached to the newsletter Parentmail the most recent edition of The Eco-nomist (geddit?). My thanks to all the boys who have put such hard work into their excellent articles, and to Emma Krebs for putting the whole issue together.
