Senior Leadership Team Update
We would like to start by paying tribute to all students from Year 11 and the Sixth Form who have taken examinations this week. Their attitude and commitment has been excellent and we expect this to continue for the final two weeks. They will all enjoy a well deserved long summer break when they are finished! We have a busy term ahead with lots of exciting events on the horizon such as the Summer Cup, House Lip Sync Battle, The KEVI Extravaganza and the House Champions Reward Day!
Our high standards of uniform and appearance are an important reason why many families trust us with the education of their children. We would like to remind everyone of two aspects of our standards this week. Uniform will be a timely reminder as families start to think about purchasing uniform over the summer months ready for September.
Being a member of our KEVI school community means agreeing to follow a set of rules which we believe in. By doing this we are showing respect to every other member of our community who all have to follow the same rules. We cannot choose to opt out of rules we don’t like because this shows a lack of respect to others. At KEVI we always show respect to others and to our school.
We also must remember that the uniformity of our uniform and standards protects wellbeing and mental health as it levels the playing field for everyone. No-one looks cooler, richer or trendier than anyone else. We work hard to eradicate fashionable uniform trends, such as having large gaps between trousers and short trainer socks, short skirts, trainers, dyed hair, piercings and hair styles which do not meet our published rules.
Hair:
- Extreme styles are not acceptable.
- Hair should be of a natural colour.
- If your hair is over shoulder length, then it should be tied back for practical lessons or where health and safety requires it.
- If your hair impedes your vision, it must be drawn back away from your face
- Hair ties/bobbles/bows/clips must be black only.
- Shaving any part of the head below a grade 2, including tramlines or other shaped shaving, is not accepted, nor is the use of gel/mousse to create unusual styles.
- Shaving must be blended and not ‘step’ style.
- Shaved eyebrows are also not accepted.
Please see the images below for further guidance.
Above shows 2 images that are permitted.
- Tapered or scissor fade which starts at a number 2 or above.
- No use of razor to shave the hair on the sides or back.
Images below are NOT permitted.
- High or medium fade where a razor is used to shave parts of the hair.
- Any additional lines created by a razor.
- Any shorter than a number 2 on the top of the head.
Uniform:
We introduced a new KEVI skirt for September 2022. The new KEVI skirt is pleated, falls below the knee and can only be purchased from Nationwide School Uniforms shop. If students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 13 still have skirts that fit, as long as they fall within 5cm of the knee, they can continue to be worn until July 2023. For September 2023 if students choose to wear a skirt it must be the KEVI skirt. Students may prefer to wear school trousers.
Trousers must be black, shaped leg or bootcut. Tight fitting trousers or jeggings or trousers that show the ankle are not acceptable. Leggings or trousers of a stretchy material are not permitted. Trousers should meet shoes, and the socks should be black ankle socks, not shorter trainer socks.
The Executive Principal's decision regarding all uniform and presentation issues is binding and final.
Thank you for your support as we work towards ensuring every student can lead a life through choice, not chance.
Have a lovely weekend.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE – JOIN OUR ACADEMY SCRUTINY COMMITTEE
King Edward VI Academy is looking for a Parent Governor
Are you interested in Education and want to make a difference to the success of the next generation of young people?
YES? Then become an Academy Governor. We are looking for a Parent Governor to join our Academy Scrutiny Committee at KEVI.
The Academy Scrutiny Committee has three key functions:
- Understanding and promoting the Trust’s and the Academy’s vision and ethos.
- Scrutiny and Challenge of achievement of targets, school improvement and pupil outcomes. Escalation of any concerns to the Trustees via the Executive; and
- Supporting and facilitating parental and community engagement.
No special qualifications are needed and the most important thing is to have a keen interest in the Academy and be prepared to play an active part in the Academy Scrutiny Committee’s work. Training is provided by the Trust. We meet six times a year to share successes and work on improving the academy. We attend events and support the Senior Leadership Team in community engagement and work with the Principal to ensure every child is supported and feels safe.
Values – Courage
As we approach a really important assessment period for everyone in Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 it is worth reflecting on how one of our core values will need to come to the fore to help guide us. Some students will be relishing the opportunity to show off what they have learned since they joined the school. Some students may be apprehensive about the pressure to achieve results they can be proud of. Courage will take lots of different forms over the coming weeks but we know that by showing courage through such experiences we gain strength for the long term.
Why we do what we do -Academy Rationale
Thinking Aloud
On a daily basis we ask staff to model strategies, approaches and exam questions as this is a powerful way for students to learn. Whilst modelling we ask that they 'Think Aloud'. Staff will explain why they are approaching a task in a particular way, they will questions students about what should come next, or what would be a better piece of vocabulary to use here etc... This process creates opportunities for providing practical solutions for pupils in how to approach difficult problems; it helps pupils develop into independent learners and can help teachers understand the strengths and weaknesses of their pupils.

- What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
- Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?

Attendance
How does attendance affect outcomes for pupils?
Being in school is important to your child’s achievement, wellbeing, and wider development. Evidence shows that the students with the highest attendance throughout their time in school gain the best GCSE and A Level results.
The evidence shows that pupils who performed better both at the end of primary and secondary school missed fewer days than those who didn’t perform as well.
Secondary school pupils who didn’t achieve grade 9 to 4 in English and maths missed on 10 more days on average over the key stage than those who achieved grade 9 to 5 in both English and maths.
Every moment in school counts, and days missed add up quickly. For example, a child in Year 10 who is absent for three days over a half term would miss 15 hours of learning and practice in lessons. We know that with 15 hours practice we could make significant progress at anything!
The higher a pupil’s attendance, the more they are likely to learn, and the better they are likely to perform in exams and formal assessments.
If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance, then please contact Mrs Kwee on 01790 753 260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Table Talk
Please take time over the next few days to discuss assessment preparation for all students who are in Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. Assessment week for Key Stage 3 starts on Monday 12th June and these will take place in lessons throughout the week. For Year 10 and 12 please see the final exam timetables below. Before half term we sent assessment guides to all families and strongly recommend using them for the basis of discussions around assessment preparation. It is normal to feel nervous or apprehensive before important events. Here are some questions to guide conversations:
- Which techniques are they using to revise? The booklet contains techniques which evidence and research show to be effective.
- When is revision happening? Students should commit to a programme of planned revision.
- What subject content is being assessed? All this information is contained within the guides.

Teen Support
Determining whether certain behaviour is normal or a symptom of a mental health condition can be difficult. Learn when to ask for help, how to talk to your friends and family about mental health, and more.
Teenage years bring on so much change that it can leave your head spinning. Your body begins to change, you sound/look more like an adult and keeping up with friends can feel like a full-time job. What you may not realize is that while your body matures, so does your brain. You begin developing more life skills, become more independent, spend more time with your friends than your family and start thinking more about your life goals and values — all exciting and challenging parts of growing up.
With all these changes, it’s no wonder you might feel like yelling one second and crying for no reason the next. Along with all the new things happening in your life, new stresses and worries also come up about family, friends, school, your body, your future and your identity.
It shouldn’t be surprising to learn that signs of mental health conditions often emerge during this developmental stage. About half of all people who experience a mental health condition in their lifetime begin experiencing symptoms before the age of 14, but other teens and their family members often do not notice them until several years later. Determining whether certain behavior is normal/typical or a symptom of a mental health condition can be difficult. It can be even harder for young people who live in a low-income household or who are part of communities that experience prejudice, racism, exclusion or marginalisation.
The good news is that if you ask for help and support early on, you can find healthy ways to help you get through your teen years and prepare for life as a young adult — even if you have a mental health condition.

Word of the Week: Transcend
Transcend: verb – to go beyond limits or a normal range; to surpass.
Origin - Latin: trans – across; scandere – climb.
The students transcended the curriculum and became experts, philosophers and ready for the world.
Love can transcend barriers.
International leaders worked together to transcend the limits of their countries’ borders.
Maths
Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.
At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.
Week commencing 12/06/2023 - we will be chanting our 9 times table.
Miss H Johnson - Head of Maths
Accelerated Reader
This week we have new Word Half-Millionaires! A huge well done to:
- Oliver (Y8) 634,468 words!
- Olly (Y7) : 564,562 words!
- Ava (Y8) : 544, 512 words!
Words are added to ongoing student scores from completed quizzes which have scored a pass mark.
Who will add their name as a Quarter Word Millionaire or a Half Millionaire Word next week?
Please encourage your child to quiz on the books they have read. They are able to do this in tutor times and during KEVI Reads times. Quizzing shows us how well your child has comprehended the book they have completed and indicates their progress to us. It also supports us in helping your child to choose books appropriate to their ability.
Library Opening Times
The Library opening times are increasingly back to normal. It is open before school at break and during lunch time. Should students choose to read books from home, please Google “A R Bookfinder” where you will be able to check the level (BL) of more than 180,000 books.
