Adams Update January 6, 2023

New Traditions: Holiday Sing-a-Long is a Blast!

Adams Elementary students and staff had a great time celebrating during our Holiday Sing-a-Long, on the last day before winter break. Students sang songs together, with each grade presenting a song to the rest of the school. The songs celebrated a number of different cultural traditions and four different languages (!), so that was awesome, too! Much gratitude to Mr. Webber, our music teacher, for spearheading this fun event. Great job, Atoms!

NWEA Family Reports Sent Home Prior to Break

By this time you've had a chance to look over the NWEA Family Reports that were sent home prior to break. As a reminder, students take the NWEA three times per year, with scores provided in Reading and Math. This is NOT a high-stakes test--the results simply help us measure growth and give us an idea of where to help students learn next. If you have questions about your child's scores, please reach out to me or your child's teacher.

SEL with Mrs. Ferguson: Social Awareness

Happy New Year and welcome back! Our SEL focus the next two months is Social Awareness. A socially aware individual keeps an open mind towards people that are different from them, and accepts others for who they are. By establishing a socially aware culture here at school we increase the likelihood of healthy friendships, responsible decisions, and a positive classroom climate. Adults who are socially aware have those same benefits, along with increased career success. Active listening and empathy are two critical skills for socially aware individuals. An active listener engages in conversation to understand, rather than to simply respond. A person who is empathetic is able to express kindness to all. At the end of the day, we all have differences, and that is what makes us interesting. Being socially aware allows us to connect with each other through those differences, which makes our planet a place where all have the opportunity to live, thrive, and survive!

Kindergarten Roundup!

The Adams Elementary Kindergarten Roundup parent meeting will occur on February 7, 2023, at 6:00 pm, in the Cafeteria. Please plan on attending if you have a child who will be five years of age on or before September 1, 2023. If you know of a child in your neighborhood who will be eligible to enter Kindergarten and whose parents might not receive this notice, please encourage them to call Adams Elementary School at 989-923-6037 to be added to our communications list. Highlights

Happy New Year! The Adams PTO is thankful for you and your continued support of the PTO and the Adams classrooms. Our Dream Big playground remodel took a huge step last month when we ordered several new playground equipment pieces for the Lower El playground! The new equipment will arrive this summer and be installed prior to school starting in the fall. Adams families also had a blast at the latest Adams Skate Night, with our largest attendance yet. Finally, the December Popcorn day raised $392 for our classrooms--wow! Please see the below dates and visit the site for more details.
