Ullesthorpe CE Primary School Newsletter Friday 5th November 2021

A message from Mrs Tithecott

The children have settled in well after half-term and are already showing us what superstars they are! We have lots of amazing activities and work that we are delighted to share with you further on in the newsletter.

The weather has stated to get rather chilly recently, please ensure the children are coming in ready for their time outside with named jumpers and coats, as well as appropriate, warm kit for PE days. Thank you.

It was wonderful to be able to welcome all our parents on site again for parents' evening and great to catch up with everyone! We hope you enjoyed having the opportunity to look through books and see all the hard work the children are producing.

As we broke up for half term, we wished a very fond farewell to Mrs Whetton who has moved on to a more senior role in a different school.

Three cheers for Mrs Whetton!

We wish her every success in her new job.

Would you like to join?

Mrs Hartley is keen to get the Eco Committee up and running again. If you are interested in joining, she would like to hear your ideas on how we could make our school more environmentally friendly. How can we save energy? Look after the wildlife? Reduce our waste? Maybe you could research some ideas. Please record your ideas in drawings or writing and she will collect these next week and select children from each key stage to help. She looks forward to seeing your ideas.

This week (8th to 12th November) is MATHS WEEK ENGLAND.

This is a national initiative that aims to raise the profile of mathematics in England. They also aim to change the conversation about maths in the population to be more positive and make maths more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

We have lots of activities and competitions happening this week:

Design a Money Box competition (ask your teacher for the entry template)

Maths in Art competition - draw or paint a picture using shapes, patterns or symmetry (think Kandinsky or tessellation designs)

Kandinsky

Closing Date for both competitions is Wednesday 17th November.

There is a national KS2 TTRockstars class competition and we have also set up a Birch v Oak Battle of the Bands Challenge - both run all week.

In school there will be a lunchtime club (Monday - Wednesday) where children can come along and play maths games or solve maths puzzles. Children will also be involved in extra maths activities including games, puzzles and maths story-time during the week.

We look forward to lots of maths talk this week and sharing what we have done in our next newsletter.

Mrs McMurran

Hello Yellow at Harvest Time!

A big thank you to Anna for coming to lead our Harvest Service. They also sang beautifully!

The children were keen to join in with story and lead prayers

Thank you again for the generous donations of food which have now been delivered to the Lutterworth and Villages Foodbank warehouse.

Can we please remind everyone that morning drop off is between 8.45 am & 8.55 am. Anyone arriving after that will be classed as a late arrival. Also, could we remind everyone who comes by car to park safely. There have been a couple of near misses at the junction of Ashby Road with Main Street.

My School Fund

As a school we are part of this fund initiative, we would like to get as many parents/carers signed up as possible as this benefits both you and the school. Further information can be found below.

November Birthdays

We wish the following children a very happy birthday this November

Abigail, Eva N, Willow, Bella, Freddie, Logan, Sofia, Sienna, Alfie D, Rudy, Rex, Berin, Harriet, Sophie J, Isabelle.

We are looking for new members to joining our PTA. If you are new to the school or have been thinking about joining then please get in touch with the school office!

Willow Class

The children in Willow Class have had exciting visits from people in the community.

They have been learning about different occupations and how others help keep us safe and well.

The children had fun making their own fire engine and engaged in brilliant role play together.

In Literacy they have been enjoying the story Pumpkin Soup. They wrote missing posters to find the missing character Duck. The children enjoyed going on a duck hunt and were surprised to find Duck in the school garden!

We then harvested the pumpkin that has been growing all Summer.

Of course they then wanted to use the pumpkin to make their own soup so they wrote shopping lists for Mrs Hartley to purchase the other ingredients needed. Year 1 children have written instructions on how to make the soup to send home to families.

Maple Class

Maple class has been very busy! We set up our own hospitals pre and post Florence Nightingale for the children to explore and role play in. We think the impact that Florence Nightingale made is very clear!

Before
After!

.

In RE, the creation story has been our focus and we have produced art work for each day on the story to make a timeline of the creation! This was tricky for the first days to find ways to represent them without using things that would not yet have been created.

In science, we have started our new topic of materials. The children found different objects in the room and sorted them into groups based on materials.

Our PSHE topic has involved looking at what makes a good friend and how we show this. Each child then made a good friend certificate for another child in the class so that we all received a certificate with a reason for why we are a good friend to someone else!

Birch Class

Science

Birch Class has been learning about Humans and their bodies in Science lessons. We looked at teeth before half term and have started studying digestion this week. We made our own digestive system in class from a plastic bag (stomach) and a pair of tights (intestines)! With the help of some crackers, orange juice and a banana, we followed the journey from the mouth to the bottom learning about how our bodies absorb nutrients and dispose of the waste materials they don’t need.

Thank You to our brave volunteers who weren’t afraid to get a bit mucky!

Wellbeing

Our Hello Yellow Mental Health day was great fun! We spent the day talking about how important it is to take care of ourselves and notice our feelings. Children talked about their networks of support and made paper dolls to remind themselves who they can talk to when they have a problem.

We also made paper fortune tellers with positive affirmations on how to build our resilience. your grass heads have been blooming over half term and children have been nurturing them at home.

We read a lovely book called Bloom about the importance of kind words and how the words we choose to say can cause us to wilt or bloom, like a flower. Hopefully your grass heads have been blooming over half term and children have been nurturing them at home.

Oak Class

In our topic work we have just finished learning about the 'Scramble for Africa.'

The children have been learning about the continent of Africa and it vast wealth of resources which were hotly sought after by European countries in the late 1800s

This half term we shall be finding out about all the countries involved in World War II.

The children created these phenomenal A1 sized maps of Africa to show many of the physical and human features of the continent. They also researched the huge array of natural resources and located them on their maps.

The Piano by Aidan Gibbons

Oak Class has been inspired by this wonderful and moving short film. The writing they have produced has completely blown us away!

''Whilst he knew she couldn't stay, he hoped that it wouldn't be the last time he would get to see her.'' (Noah)

''As she slowly faded away, she lightly planted a kiss on his wrinkly cheek.'' (Asma)

''Barely alive, the soldier blinked for the last time.'' (Zack)

''As quick as a flash, the bullet pierced his chest.'' (Thomas)

'' Totally overwhelmed, the grandson's finger touched the ivory key to finish the melancholy tune.'' (Oscar)

''Whilst he knew she couldn't stay, he asked her anyway.'' (Logan)

Here's a link to the short animation. Do watch it - it will show how beautiful the writing really is.

Don't forget - if you shop there we would be very grateful if you would collect the tokens. They will enable us to boost our gardening equipment and resources.

Thank you!
