HTH 4936 Internship Process Information for Health & Public Health Majors UTSA Department of Public Health

Welcome!

The Department of Public Health congratulates you on nearing graduation. This page provides an overview of the purpose and format of the health and public health internships to be completed in your last semester at UTSA. Please review the Public Health Internship Manual for full details.

Internship Goals

  1. To prepare students for entry-level work in the health-related fields
  2. To ensure that graduates are knowledgeable regarding program development, planning, implementation, and evaluation
  3. To ensure that graduates have internalized attitudes and values toward the mission and goals of the health disciplines

Internship Description

  • The internship is required for all seniors seeking a degree in Health or Public Health with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
  • The internship provides the student with an opportunity to take the cognitive knowledge and skills developed in the classroom and apply and integrate them in real-world settings.
  • Interns are required to complete a minimum of 300 hours in one semester (20 hours per week in fall/spring, 30 hours per week in summer).
  • Internships can be remote, in-person or a combination of remote and in-person.
  • Interns will also simultaneously complete academic assignments that incorporate their internship experiences.
Note: If the internship will put you over 12 or 13 hours during spring and fall, or over 6 or 7 hours for the summer (public health and health majors, respectively), you will need to file a credit hours appeal with the department before submitting your internship paperwork. Email publichealth.internship@utsa.edu to initiate this process.

Internship Site Selection

  • Students are responsible for contacting the approved internship sites.
  • Start by reviewing the approved sites on the internship website at HCaP Public Health Internship Site. Click on the site name to read the description and find contact information.
  • Contact potential sites to find out if they need interns and set up an interview with the site coordinator. It is recommended that you interview with multiple sites.
  • Submit all paperwork by the deadline to the portal indicated on the internship webpage for your internship semester. The deadline is typically 6-8 weeks before the semester starts.
  • Once approved, the department will officially register you for the internship. You cannot register yourself for the internship course.

New Site Request

If you are interested in completing your internship at a site that is not currently approved or is outside of Bexar County, you should:

  1. Ensure the site has a community or public health focus and meets other eligibility criteria.
  2. Contact the Internship Coordinator (publichealth.internship@utsa.edu) with the site name and contact information for the site coordinator at least 2 months before the deadline.
  3. Create a backup plan as site approvals are not guaranteed.

We hope you have a productive and rewarding internship! If you have questions, email publichealth.internship@utsa.edu.
