About the Sculptor

Gabrielle Cordes is a 2014 Delano High School graduate and current visual artist and Program Assistant at Franconia Sculpture Park in Shafer, MN. After receiving my BFA in Sculpture and Painting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I have interned for the City of Eden Prairie focusing on public art and events, shown my work in Iowa, Wisconsin, and New York, along with being an Artist-in-Residence at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City, NA. She wanted to give back to her hometown and create a public sculpture that highlights the community’s past, present, and future. The fence references the rural and suburban history of the city of Delano. Members of the town and their thoughts on the future are stamped in the pickets of the fence.

Sculpture Statement

My goal with “Project Redefined” is to take and mold the traditional context of the“White Picket Fence” or the “American Dream” notions that it implies. Many aspects of our society are changing, however that doesn’t mean that our past and present can’t inform the future. I want to promote Delano’s previous and positive community values while also highlighting and kickstarting the positivity and progression for the community’s future. The original fence structure represents the past and present, while the reformed “White Picket Fence” sculpture represents the compelling and bright future for the city. The fence references the rural and suburban history of the city of Delano. Members of the town and their thoughts on the future are stamped in the pickets of the fence.
