St John Vianney Newsletter 14.07.23

Headteacher's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope my final newsletter of the year finds you and your families well.

Once again, the penultimate week of the academic year has been extremely busy. Pupils have attended swimming, forest school, work related learning and the farm alongside their traditional academic lessons. I am delighted that all of the annual reports have now been sent to parents and carers. The report reflects the academic progress and pastoral achievements made throughout the year. I have enjoyed reading the annual reports this year, as they reflect positively on the wide range of experiences our children and young people enjoy on a daily basis and the impact of these experiences on their wider development. If you have any concerns or worries, after reading the report, do please contact the class teacher to discuss before the end of term.

Following success with the CAFOD Live Simply Award on Friday morning, the afternoon saw the whole school community come together to celebrate a range of sporting talents, with pupils and staff learning and playing together. Pupils took part in football, softball, disc golf and a range of physical challenges on an assault course.

It was an honour and privilege to receive Mrs. Diane Hawkins JP LLB, His Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester and one of her Deputy Lieutenants, Mrs. Melanie Bryan OBE, into school yesterday to present awards to some of our Post 16 learners for their charity work. They listened to presentations of the pupils' work and were truly impressed by the wide range of activities and contribution to the community made by SJV students. They visited a number of lessons and praised staff and pupils alike for their dedication, conscientious attitude and the development of future aspiration at St. John Vianney.

We now look forward to the final week of term, working hard and earning our summer holiday break. I will be in school on the 24th August, GCSE results day, to organise letters that will be sent home on the day by email detailing the results of our Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 leavers. I will also phone the parents/carers of all GCSE pupils to update them of student outcomes, which will allow them to plan for their next steps.

Can I remind you please that the summer term ends at 1.30pm on Friday 21st July. We have informed transport of the earlier pick up. The new school term starts at 9am on Tuesday 5th September.

I hope you and your families have a great weekend and Summer holiday, when it arrives.

Best Wishes,

Mr G Damant, Assistant Headteacher

CAFOD Live Simply Award

Last Friday we were assessed, as a School, by CAFOD for their Live Simply Award. The award recognises schools that have planned and undertaken activities to ‘Live Simply, Live Sustainably and Live in Solidarity with the Poor’. We are thrilled to announce that our application has been approved and our practice and work this year has been validated by CAFOD, an international fundraising organisation for overseas development.

The whole school this year has been involved in so many activities that reflect our Catholic Mission and Ethos and the assessment team commended us on the extent of our School Improvement ‘Laudato Si’ work. (Please see letter to the right). Thank you for the support we have had from parents, carers and families this year, who have been particularly generous in supporting our many fundraising activities. We aim now to continue with many of these new activities and embed them as part of our school schedules for the next academic year.

SJV Class News

Class 1

Class 1 did some great turn taking during their science experiment this week. Well Done!

Class 2

Class 2 have been learning all about rivers from around the world. This week, we made our own model rivers using foil trays, tin foil and sand. We watched as our water ran through the 'river' into the 'sea'.

Class 3

This week the boys have been doing some more athletics work with Mr Wood Sr.. This time they have used some real javelins and practiced their technique. They listened fantastically and were very safe and sensible when using the javelins.

On Wednesday they enjoyed practicing their tram skills with a visit to Altrincham due to the unfavourable weather.

On Thursday they have rounded off their breakfast food technology work with a fry up! They learned about all the different techniques you need to use to make a full English and got rewarded with a tasty treat at the end!

Class 5

Class 5 enjoyed a brilliant trip to Mayfield park this week. The children loved the visit, even though the weather was against us.

Class 6

Class 6 have been having sessions with Havoc the dog in school. They have been training with Havoc all term and they now can use verbal commands for Havoc to get around the obstacle course without the need for a lead.

Class 7

This week at the farm Class 7 had to measure the length of the grass in different areas. They then worked out how much each field would sell for.

Class 8

Class 8 had a great trip to Mayfield Park on Thursday morning. We even had time for an ice cream.

Class 9

Class 9 have been learning about documentaries in English. This week they explored a mockumentary called The Majestic Plastic bag; an issue on Plastic waste and our Oceans. The students understood the impact plastic has on our environment, but enjoyed the humorous commentary.

Class 11

Class 11 have been displaying excellent team work skills during registration. They have been playing the interactive geography game 'City Guesser'. The aim is to locate the geographical destination of countries around the world on an interactive map as well as learning about other cultures.

Class 12

Class 12 had a wonderful and sad week. Wonderful spending time at 'The Limelight Hub' building our community relations and sharing stories from residents, excellent use of social skills.

Sad because we said goodbye to Filip this week. We wish him all the luck for the future.

Carrington

This week at Carrington our group of children learned about different cat breeds whilst playing a cat board game.

Our Catholic School

"When Jesus is your companion you have joy, calmness and happiness”

Pope Francis

I said last week that I would tell you about how we got on at the CAFOD live simply accreditation . I am very proud to say that SJV was awarded the CAFOD live simply award. Our lead chaplains represented SJV so well and it was a wonderful celebration of all the work SJV as a school community have done to show our care for the environment, solidarity to the poor and how we are trying to live more simply.

This week at SJV we are focusing on 'thinking of others'. We are reminded in the Gospel this week that Jesus loves us and offers us his comfort and everlasting companionship. Pope Francis reminds us that ‘When Jesus is your companion you have joy, calmness and happiness’.

Within our Catholic school we are busy putting the final touches to the end of year Mass. The chaplaincy teams are busy rehearsing, learning reading, practicing bidding prayers and their liturgical dance and drumming. Making sure everything is perfect and having their vital input and say on the liturgical life of the school.

Within RE this week we have looked at the importance of faith in our life, why we need to trust God and allow that strength to help us in our day to day lives. We have continued to look at different faiths and how British Values work alongside faith, and how those values influence different people in our diverse society. Also, why it is important to uphold British Values and practice your faith and show respect for all faiths.

Another full busy week at SJV once again. I am not sure how we fit it all in!

Goodbye from Mrs Whiting

The time has come for me to go to pastures new. Next week I will be leaving SJV. Although I am excited for a change, I will also be sad to leave my SJV family. I have been so very fortunate to have experienced that special feeling of belonging to a great community filled with such wonderful people, I will surely miss that. What I will be taking with me though, is the countless memories of great children and great times.

I have loved teaching our incredible pupils, particularly Drama, where I have been privileged to watch them grow in confidence and learn how to express themselves. The fun, the laughter and surprises have been priceless, I could tell a few tales!

I would like to thank parents and carers for the many ways in which you have been kind and supportive, and for all of the lovely chats I’ve had with you over the years. I would also like to thank all pupils for being who they are and bringing me so much joy.

Wishing you all the very best in life.

Love and best wishes

Jan Whiting
