U of L Coutts Centre Artist in residence - june 26 - 29, 2022

Day two of my stay in the Coutts Family Homestead.

Staying in the home was like visiting my grandparent's house. It did not look at all like their place but there was something familiar in the creak of a floorboard, the furniture, and the smell of the place. It was a special time when we visited my grandparent's farm and spent the summer running rampant through the fields of corn or helping with chores. There was a picture frame on one dresser with some old family photos in it - I have the same frame in my office with a picture of my mom as a young girl and another of my uncle. The house was comfortable and full of memories.

And - the gardens were available whenever I liked - well, except if there was a wedding, which there was. What a venue to have your special day in. I was pretty sure they didn't need another photographer so I stayed out of the way, but it was nice watching from a distance.

Spending time in the garden is easier when you don't feel you have to get everywhere all at once. I visited different gardens at different times and enjoyed the slower pace.

Richardson geranium, cranesbill geranium and bunny tails - how cute a name is that?

Of course, there were poppies. Early ones whose seed pods are almost as interesting as the blossom.

Non-blooming things of interest

The greenhouse

is put to good use

Whoever created this work should be commended. Recycled material and most interesting design. Very well done!

I wonder if I could convince my husband to make something like this?

Soon to bloom

Another evening walkabout revealed light on the hairy stems of poppies.

Sometimes those added touches really make a difference, taking views from good to great!

Colour in the Herb Garden

Another gentle Alberta sunset

Tomorrow will be my final full day - how does time pass so fast when the pace here is so slow?
