Discovering Florence A faculty-led travel course for General Education

Ciao from Italy!

To kick off the new year, 12 students visited Florence, Italy for the Gen Ed Capstone travel course, led by faculty members Ned Bradford and Patricia Bonarrigo.

During this Gen Ed capstone travel course, students participated in experiential tours, site visits, cooking classes, and more. Our students studied at the Florence University of the Arts (FUA), which aims to enhance the social, intercultural, and professional experience of each student. FUA offers liberal arts coursework and unique learning opportunities in cutting-edge fashion, design, architecture, and culinary arts.

Academic Experiences

As part of the three-credit capstone course, Discovering Florence provided students with a global academic learning experience inside the classroom. Students attended classes on Italian culture and the Renaissance, culinary arts, and more. This course emphasizes the integration of ideas and knowledge in Liberal Arts disciplines and is the culminating experience in the General Education curriculum.

In the weeks to follow, our students will complete assignments based on their experiences, ending with a final research paper.

Cultural Experiences

Our students enjoyed all that Florence has to offer, and participated in experiential tours and site visits. Some of their favorite sites included the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, and The Villa Torrigiani.

In Florence, there was a lot to see and so much history to learn. Studying abroad provides you with a chance to see a country in a different way than if you just went on vacation. It also gives you the opportunity to get class credit while seeing the world. Experiencing someone's culture and customs is life changing.

Overall the trip was such a wonderful experience and is one that I will never forget. I gained so much knowledge of Florence's history while taking in its amazing views. I also got to visit museums and learn about different artists, while trying new foods, (endless gelato!) and many more.

Faculty-led courses are a perfect way to start the study abroad experience. Led by Curry College faculty and supported by the Center for Global and Career Services, the travel portion of the class is 1-3 weeks, depending on the course and the time of year, and students complete the rest of the course requirements on campus.

Quite simply, any study abroad experience, short term, or long term, changes our students lives forever. It gives them independence, international knowledge, and lifelong friendships." -Ned Bradford, Associate Professor
