Senior Leadership Team Update
There have been lots of exciting events at KEVI this week. A team of students from years 8, 9 and 12 represented KEVI in a regional debating competition at Skegness Grammar School. They were an absolute credit to KEVI and were recognised for their courage, respect, confidence and manners as well as their fierce debating skills. Year 10 students experienced a trip to Boston College to gain a greater understanding of life at college and the variety of potential pathways. The week has also seen Year 12 students visit Bishop Grosseteste University to support their A-Level in History and others have taken part in a Boccia competition and the DRET Sprint Trials in Boston.
This week we have also said farewell and good luck to students from Year 11 and Year 13 who have completed their studies. Well done and good luck for August when we get the results.
This week three members of staff at KEVI received recognition at the annual David Ross Education Trust Inspiration Awards.
Miss Cook, Teacher of English was nominated in the New Teacher of the Year category. Miss Cook thoroughly deserves this recognition for her brilliant work as a teacher and form tutor for 7 Arete. Her excellent teaching and high standards for all are something we are really proud of. We are very lucky that Miss Cook chooses to teach at KEVI.
Mrs Crow, Pastoral Manager was nominated for the Exceptional Support Team Member Award. Mrs Crow goes above and beyond her duties every single day to provide care and support for students and colleagues. She is the very best of KEVI personified and we are blessed that she is part of this school community. Mrs Crow won the KEVI Support Team Member Award.
Mr Everton, Head of Physical Education won the KEVI Teacher of the Year Award. Everything Mr Everton does is of the highest of standards. He is an excellent teacher and a brilliant subject leader who embodies our values of ambition and aspiration to deliver the very best for our students. We are very lucky to have Mr Everton as part of our team.

Values – Respect
“No one who achieves success does so without the help of others. The wise and confident acknowledge this help with gratitude.” – Alfred North Whitehead
Our topic for house assemblies this week was gratitude which is important for so many reasons. Gratitude is an important part of character and it also closely links to our value of respect.
When we show gratitude to someone we show them respect. In assembly students looked at a Forbes magazine article which showed proven benefits to ourselves of showing gratitude. You will notice another link to our values on this list:
- It pays back by making others more likely to help you in the future
- Improves physical health
- Improves psychological health
- Enhances empathy and reduces aggression
- Grateful people sleep better
- Improved self esteem
- Increased resilience

Sports Day
Every year we run a Sports Day. It is a great event. Students and staff come together to enjoy some friendly competition as houses are pitted against each other. Students compete for house points that go towards the House Championship.
Students will parade out of school in their house groups to the field where they will participate either as an athlete or as a spectator. Both roles are important. The spectators need to motivate and enthuse the athletes through their cheering and clapping and athletes take part in a wide range of sports.
This year Sports Day is Friday 14th July and we are really looking forward to it.
House News
This week students have been creating raps in their English lessons. Each form together have created a rap as a team and filmed themselves rapping. Final raps will be filmed next week. Then the results will be revealed.
Next week we have our annual Summer Extravaganza. We are so excited for the surprise house events in the morning. Students need to bring some money to spend on the stalls in the afternoon. Don’t forget students favourite stall ‘soak a teacher’. We have an ice cream van and fish and chips.

Thinking Ahead – My Future, My Choice
Attention Year 8 & Year 9!
- What are your future plans & career possibilities?
- What plans to do you have after you have completed your GCSEs?
- Do you plan to go on to further/higher education? If so what courses might you study?
- What career ideas do you have for the future at the moment?
In year 7, 8 and 9 you will be learning new skills and knowledge that will give you the confidence to help you plan your next steps. This process starts with your careers education in school which will encourage you to think about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes. You will also start to make some important decisions that could influence your future career path as you will be choosing your subjects to study for GCSE. This process will begin for all Year 9 students early next year.

Attendance
How does attendance affect outcomes for pupils?
Being in school is important to your child’s achievement, wellbeing, and wider development. Evidence shows that the students with the highest attendance throughout their time in school gain the best GCSE and A Level results.
Lets have a final push on attendance leading up to the long summer break and help support your house by having fantastic attendance.
Please remember to provide school with Hayfever tablets and or Paracetamol so we can support your child in managing any symptoms in school.
If you would like to discuss your child’s attendance or need any support with attendance, then please contact Mrs Kwee on 01790 753 260 or tkwee@kingedwardacademy.co.uk to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

Table Talk
Windrush Day is observed annually on 22 June in the United Kingdom. The day was introduced in June 2018 on the 70th anniversary of the Windrush migration. Windrush Day is not a bank holiday. It was instituted following a successful campaign led by Patrick Vernon.
It would be great to discuss around the table the reasons for celebrating Windrush day and discuss our interracial and multicultural society we live in today, examining some of the and breaking down some of the racial and prejudiced views of our societies past.

Teen Support
Lots of people like to play video or online games and can spend many hours gaming. For lots of people this is ok, and they are able to have other hobbies and interests, see friends, and still get on with their everyday lives. For others, this love of gaming can tip into being unhelpful, and impact on their life in a damaging way. It is possible to be at risk of, or develop, an addiction to gaming in a similar way to those who are at risk of, or addicted, to substances (such as drugs or alcohol).
What it might look like, or feel like, if someone is struggling with problematic gaming:
- Constantly thinking about, or wanting to play the game;
- Feeling irritable and restless (fidgety) when not playing;
- Under reporting, or lying about how much time they’ve spent playing, or playing in secret (such as in the middle of the night);
- Tiredness, headaches or hand pain from too much screen time, and use of controllers;
- Not wanting to pay attention to things such as personal hygiene (eg, washing) or eating;
- Not seeing friends as often, or doing other things they used to enjoy doing, as all their time is spent gaming/ online;
- Not wanting to go to school so that they can game;
- Sleep disturbance (difficulties getting to, or staying asleep, or restless sleep with or without nightmares).
Not everyone who has a gaming addiction will experience all these signs and symptoms. Also, if a young person is experiencing some of these signs and symptoms this does not necessarily mean that they have a gaming addition, but it may be important to get further help and advice.
Hampshire NHS have some great support on line and can be accessed here Gaming Addiction – CAMHS (hampshirecamhs.nhs.uk) alternatively talk to a member of staff at school and we can help.
King Edward Debating Society
The newly formed King Edward Debating Society has taken its first steps by participating in the 2023 Skegness Grammar School Annual Debating Competition.
In preparation, the Senior Debating Team visited SGS informally last week to dip their toes into the challenging water of open, spontaneous debate and thoroughly enjoyed their time with SGS debaters. After feeling nervous, they left buoyed and energised by the debating process. On Wednesday this week, the Senior Debating Team took part in two debates, their favourite motion being “This house believes that Chat GPT is a threat to humanity.” In opposition to the motion, they made a strong attack to Boston Grammar’s arguments in favour of the motion and at times rebutted their arguments in true debating style. A huge well done to Riley, Olivia, Tamzin and Finola for representing KEVI so articulately. We are extremely impressed with all of you!
The Senior Team took four Year 8 and four Year 9 students promising debaters in support. They participated in a Junior Team workshop and Charlotte spoke her way to success to win their workshop debate! Certainly, when watching and supporting the Senior Debating Team, they appreciated the skills and courage that our Seniors displayed, some of them commenting on their own aspirations now to debate in a formal setting. Well done to AJ, Sam, Joseph, Charlotte, Asia, Olivia, Chris and Erin for their participation, support and exemplary behaviour.
The Senior Debating Team are going to run a Junior Debating Team at lunchtimes which will be advertised for all current Y7 and Y8 students to join. Current Y9 students will be invited to join the Senior Team in September.
Word of the Week: Prerogative
Prerogative: abstract noun – an exclusive right, power or privilege for a person or for a group of individuals.
Origin - Latin: praerogativa – chosen to vote first, asked before anyone else.
It is the prerogative of parents to decide which phone their child has.
King Charles III has the prerogative to claim every unmark swan in the United Kingdom as his own.
When teenagers have completed their GCSEs, it is their prerogative to decide their next step in education.
Maths
Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their times tables to help embed them in their long term memory.
At the end of each lesson, they will stand behind their chairs in silence, preparing for themselves for the next lesson and just before they leave the whole class will chant the timetables assigned for that week.
Week commencing 26/06/2023 - we will be chanting our 7 times table.
Mrs H Johnson - Head of Maths
Accelerated Read
This week we have new Word Half-Millionaires! A huge well done to:
- Oscar Y9 : 716,957 words!
- Freya Y7: 706,646 words!
We also have new Word Millionaires! Congratulations to:
- Chloe Y7: 1,195,884 words!
- TJ Y8: 1,008,987 words!
Words are added to ongoing student scores from completed quizzes which have scored a pass mark.
There are just four more weeks of term left to get to those Quarter Word Millionaire, Half Word Millionaire and Word Millionaire targets. Carry on reading and keep quizzing!
Please encourage your child to quiz on the books they have read. As well as having the opportunity to quiz during tutor times and during KEVI Reads times, your child can now access Accelerated Reader at home via Dret Cloud. They can simply log into Dret Cloud and select the AR icon.
Please ask your child to see their English teacher if they have forgotten their Accelerated Reader username or password.
Overdue Books
Overdue book reminders are sent to parental emails. Please look out for them and if you receive one, please then encourage your child to return or renew books which are overdue so that they can be issued to other students. Books which are not returned must be replaced which causes unnecessary cost.
Book Logs
Your child is now recording every time they read on a temporary book log. Please encourage them to complete it when reading at home. It is kept inside their reading book. You will be able to monitor your child’s progress by looking at their book log with them.
Library Opening Times
The Library is open before school at break and during lunch time. Should students choose to read books from home, please Google “A R Bookfinder” where you will be able to check the level (BL) of more than 180,000 books.

Sports Enrichment
Year 7 Rounders team travelled to Skegness Grammar School on Monday to enjoy a very challenging rounders match against their Year 7 team. Unfortunately, the KEVI team were not successful with a win on this occasion, but pleasingly displayed some of the KEVI values, resilience and respect, and demonstrated some excellent fielding skills.
The KEVI Boccia Teams took part in a DRET Boccia Tournament on Tuesday at Boston. The two mixed teams representing KEVI played four games each against other DRET schools and ended the tournament with both KEVI teams playing each other. The teams represented the school wonderfully, with a positive attitude and competitive spirit.
The DRET Athletics Sprint Trials take place this week in preparation for the Summer Cup which takes place on 6th July, excitement is mounting in anticipation of Team and Captain selection.
If your child has any special sporting interests or achievements outside of school, please make us aware so we can help to support their future development. Feel free to email me on lburton@kingedwardacademy.co.uk.
