Monday, Nov. 21, 2022

Dear University community,

  • The Thanksgiving holiday will soon be upon us and we all have very much to be thankful for this year. Reach out and thank family and friends, near and far. A hug goes a long way!
  • To help our TAMIU community of students, faculty, and staff secure an added measure of health and safety, TAMIU is providing a limited supply of free Binax Test Kits for COVID-19. These can be used in your home to help provide peace of mind before gathering together with family and friends. Although these tests have a printed expiration of October 2022, the FDA has granted a shelf-life extension of January 2023 for these kits, as shown here.
  • Test kit distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis Monday, Nov. 21, and Tuesday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Testing Centers located in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library’s De La Chica Room (ground floor) and Student Center 216.
  • Thanks to all who took part in last week’s TAMIU Giving Day. We had tremendous response from students, faculty, staff, and alumni around the world. It’s truly inspiring to see the generosity and kindness that motivates these gifts and helps our students.
  • Congratulations to our TAMIU Dance faculty for their Dance Concerts this past weekend. From Ballet Folklorico to Contemporary to a collaborative dance research endeavor, faculty Jee Ahn, Tim Rubel, Nayeli Lopez, and their students really impressed audiences.
  • If you liked what you saw and gotta dance, TAMIU Dance faculty will host Day of Dance Workshops on the first Saturday of each month, starting in February through April 2023. Participants will take classes in Contemporary Ballet, Modern Dance, Ballet Folklórico, and Flamenco. All levels of Dance training are welcome to attend. Sessions are scheduled for Feb. 4, Mar. 4 and Apr. 1. Find out more.

Coming Up:

  • Trailblazer Legacy Night is tonight at 5:30 p.m. on the interior Lawn of the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library, weather permitting. During Trailblazers Legacy Night, TAMIU Rings spend a night inside the Trailblazers Tower. This event honors dozens of Texans who fought to establish an institution of higher learning in South Texas during a time when the education of Hispanics was heavily overlooked. Through this event, TAMIU Ring Recipients carry their legacy and their promise. The Ceremony continues Nov. 22. Details are here.
  • Intrigued by Fashion and Style? Pamela Velez, a Senior Apparel Designer with JCPenny will offer a special lecture on the Psychology of Fashion: Going Beyond in Fashion and Style, on Monday, Nov. 28 from 2 - 3:15 p.m.in Student Center 236. It’s free and open to the public. Contact Dr. Desi Vasquez at desi.vasquez@tamiu.edu for more information.
  • With finals and the end of the semester coming, it’s important that we manage our stress. TAMIU is helping students get mental health services through a collaborative grant between TAMIU Student Counseling Services, Border Region Behavioral Health Center, and Serving Children and Adults in Need. Services available include ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students). Both are provided by licensed counselors and are offered either face-to-face or virtual. Therapy sessions are provided all year round including school breaks and weekends. For more, contact Student Counseling.
  • Our annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony will be next Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. on the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library front lawn. We’ll be joined by Santa Claus and we’ll have fun activities for children and limited hot cocoa and cookies. Admission is free and open to all.
  • Also that evening, Dr. Gilberto Soto and the TAMIU Guitar Ensemble will present their 21st offering of the traditional Guitarras de Navidad at 7 p.m. in the CFPA Recital Hall. Admission is also free and open to the public. Later that evening, beginning at 8 p.m., please join us for our Midnight Breakfast for enrolled students in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library lobby.
  • As noted above, COVID-19 is still a threat here, across our State, nation, and world. Recommended face coverings/masks, and rigorous hand-washing can help reduce your exposure risk. Learn more about free on-campus testing, or secure your free testing kit (see above).
  • Finals are just around the corner. And soon, our Fall Commencement Exercises at the Sames Auto Arena. Your stage crossing is NEAR!

Let’s all work together to create a great (and short) week…Go Dustdevils! Enjoy your Thanksgiving and stay safe and well.
