Conference Report
Parks in the Spotlight - Powered by People; Inspired by Nature ... was the theme of the EUROPARC Conference in 2021. In many global and European policy frameworks, parks and protected areas have been identified as having a significant role. As such, they are in the spotlight. During the conference we focused on what parks need to “shine”. The aim was to highlight how things are achieved on the ground and to indicate what more is needed to enable Parks and Protected Areas to fulfil their potential and meet the challenges presented.
Inspired by Nature, it is the People of Parks, the staff, their communities, partners and stakeholders that make the necessary changes happen.
The Conference was a chance for all to debate, discuss and deliver new ideas, thoughts, and approaches about how we can address the political, societal and environmental challenges of today, to plan and prepare for a better future.
PROGRAMME
It was all about getting inspired and learning together! To do so, we created a program that opened the `` Zoom stage '' to politicians, nature professionals and academic professionals. We created participatory workshops that allowed our delegates to discuss how things are achieved on the ground in protected areas, and what more is needed to enable parks and protected areas to fulfill their potential. Additionally, with “ Speakers' Corner ”, we gave participants the chance to network and present their projects and outcomes.
SOME NUMBERS
At the EUROPARC Conference 2021 we had around 170 participants from over 30 countries! As the conference was online, it gave a chance to members to attend from all over Europe and beyond.
DAY 1 - Wed Oct 6
Our newly elected EUROPARC President Michael Hošek opened the conference, welcoming all the participants and directing the spotlight on the key themes of the event. He was elected at the General Assembly 2021 that took place just the day before the Conference began.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
During the first day of the conference, we welcomed three keynote speakers and gave them the floor to deliver inspiring presentations and set the tone of the event.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Ladislav Miko
Parks and Protected Areas are in the spotlight across a range of different policies - what does that mean for the future? The Head of European Commission Representation in Slovakia reminds us that we are dealing with a different Europe: political priorities have changed, and they reflect changes in environment and the demand of citizens.
"We are living in a different Europe than not so long ago [...] the green agenda is dominating!"
The green agenda now dominates even traditionally non-green political forces. Ladislav highlighted that challenges for Protected Areas have shifted, but they are not smaller. These challenges include the biodiversity and climate crises, but also the politically competing areas that Protected Areas need to deal with. All in all, this will result in Protected Area professionals sometimes having to ask the "uneasy questions": what is the priority and how do we address conflicts of interest? Ladislav expertly highlighted these challenges from a policy perspective.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: George Holmes
George Holmes, Associate Professor of Conservation and Society at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds shifted the spotlight on conservationists themselves. What are their values? What do nature conservationist think, and why? He created a special survey for the EUROPARC Network where he asked exactly these questions. During his keynote address, he presented the results.
The global conservation movement is diverse, but NOT divided.
What one of his findings, something he has found to be true in his career studying conservationists. Additionally, although the challenges presented to us are numerous, his survey found that overall the EUROPARC network is generally positive about the future. George's findings can support us in creating the future of conservation.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Frans Schepers
After turning the spotlight on the policy and environmentalist, it was now time to look at how we can achieve things on the ground. Frans Schepers from Rewilding Europe presented the work his organization is doing around Europe. The core principle of Rewilding Europe is that if we allow nature to bounce back, it does . As such, to get the best conservation results, protection is not enough: we need to recover our landscapes.
"The goal of rewilding is not to restore a painting that needs curing, it's about restoring a system that can look after itself."
During his keynote speech, he talked about the need, opportunities and principles for practical rewilding in Europe, and how this can be achieved. By providing examples from the eight landscapes Rewilding Europe is currently pioneering, Frans demonstrated a variety of scalable rewilding models. Additionally, he presented ideas on what role Protected Areas can play in creating more functional natural landscapes in Europe.
WORKSHOPS
We hosted 10 different online participatory workshops, which focused on the key theme: Parks in the Spotlight - Powered by People; Inspired by Nature. The 90 minute sessions enabled participants to debate, discuss and deliver new ideas, thinking and approaches about how we can address the political, societal and environmental challenges of today, to plan and prepare for a better future.
- Climate change
- Ecosystem Restoration
- HPHPe - Has Covid-19 put park's health work in the spotlight?
- Natural (& unnatural?) Alliances
- Technology to protect nature and our landscapes
- Sustainable agriculture
- Visitor Management
- Spotlight on Youth
- New Times, New Tourism experiences
- Periurban parks
To make the sessions really participatory, we used Google Jamboards, Mentimeter, and other online tools. We collected inputs and worked with participants to think about and understand what is needed on the ground in Parks and Protected Areas to face the challenges of today and tomorrow.
While delegates could only follow one workshop per day during the conference, paying participants now have the possibility to watch the full recordings of all other workshops, or re-watch the ones they attended. A summary of the workshops and presentations can be found on the EUROPARC website here !
DAY 2 - Thu Oct 7
SPEAKERS' CORNER
Of course we couldn't miss the chance to bring back Speakers' Corner, since it was such a success last year. This year was even better! Conference delegates could secure a 5 minute slot to present their work, project or idea. During one hour, 9 different speakers presented their work:

Final session
FLAG HANDOVER - BACK TO AUSTRIA!
The EUROPARC Conference 2021 ended with a handover of the EUROPARC flag to the next year's hosts, the Austrian Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park . The Conference will take place the 2nd till the 6th of May 2022 . We will discover what it takes to communicate in the 21st century (one hint: Question your Mindset!).
TWO face-to-face EUROPARC Conferences in 2022
Of course, a EUROPARC Conference always has some surprises in store: next year there will be TWO face-to-face EUROPARC Conferences. Beside the one in Austria, from the 4 - 7 October 2022 we will meet in Argelès-sur-Mer in France for a special Conference focussed on Climate Change , as part of the LIFE Natur'Adapt project. During this Conference, organized by new EUROPARC Member 'Federation des Reserves Naturelles Catalanes', we will discover how we can create resilient parks.
